15 hrs layoff at Miami International- Key West Possible ?

Do you think I could get a cruise to the Key West from Miami and back? I have 15hrs before changing flights.I'm a regular on the Asia,Africa boards.First time here.So need help to plan a short trip (sail ) to the Key West.No clue as to the logistics,in terms of distance and time.Is it a sensible thing to do.
If you think I'm stupid, anything similar to do.Short cruises. Thanks in anticipation.

While it may be technically feasible to do this, the drive to Key West from Miami takes a minimum of 4 hours and perhaps more with traffic, so I think you'd be insane to do it (my opinion, of course, you may think differently). More workable would be Key Largo. Still, I'd suggest you spend some time in Miami, where there's quite a bit to see. Or go to the Everglades and take an airboat ride if you want to do something iconic (though that may be difficult as well).

There are no cruises between Miami and Key West. The only regular cruises (seasonal) to Key West are from Ft. Myer's, and they take 4 hours each way.

And I agree with Doug about driving - it'd be WAY too long to even get a whiff of what Key West is about.

Spend the layover at South Beach... the Art Deco district on Ocean Boulevard, the outdoor cafes, sexy beach, shopping and general style of the area has it's own feel that you won't find anywhere else...

Agree with above. KW would be interesting, but it's really not feasible. Head to South Beach for dinner, strolling, people-watching. Or if interested in something a little slower, the Fairchild botanical garden in Coral Gables is a nice place to spend a half-day.

Never mind the distance to Key West—there is only one way to drive there. Even if it were just an hour away, I wouldn't do it on an airport layover. All it takes is one bad wreck to close the highway and leave you stranded.

Is a trip to the everglades for an iconic air boat ride a another stupid idea? Not really a city bloke, neither do I enjoy raking your brains.looking for more ideas.

It's been years since we went on the airboat ride, and though it was fun, I didn't think it was good enough to warrant the time it took. Since your time is limited, I think you'd be happier sticking to South Beach.

Its a shame your only going to be in town for 15 hours. The ferry boat ride from ft myers beach to key west is a great trip! It runs all year round, but I'm pretty sure it runs seasonaly out of Marco Island. Next time your in Florida definitaly plan a day for Key West, its well worth it

Depends how badly you want to see Key West. Personally, I would NOT do it, but to each their own. I'd probably hang out in South Beach for the day, or do a bus tour and take in the highlights of Miami.
