LOL Pam! Would you be a dear and run up to Papapietro-Perry and get me a case of the 2004 Peter's Vineyard Pinot? WS gave it 91 points...CRUD!!! Get it before it's gone. Any chance of a GTG in November? I'm easy to spot, I'm the one with good wine and a cheap purse!

Okay, for Mike T, I will re-phrase:
Oh God. Yawn. At least the fake bag hawkers are working instead of peeing on the side of my building, looking for a hand out, and selling crack on my corner. Buy the bag.

One of the highlights of my trip was buying a Kate Spade knockoff in Soho - safe and great stuff around the area for browsing. I still get tons of compliments on the bag when I carry it and fond memories - buy the bag.

I have a question - perhaps a really lame question, but bear with me
All this talk about counterfit bags, illegal fakes, etc - police targetting the counterfiters, the customers. What about the knock offs you find in the kiosks in the mall? What is the difference? They say Coach, Prada, etc. on them and look to be the same styles as the "real thing". Why are the knockoffs on Canal Street illegal, but not the ones in the mall kiosk?

Mike T - Get off your soapbox.
You are the same poster who told a vacationer how to get to Cuba and even pointed them to the website. Last time I checked it was illegal to travel from the US to Cuba, but there are those who think it is okay if they go to Mexico first. Apparently, you are one of those.
So, what is it? Breaking the law is okay if they do it your way?

"Knock offs" are different from counterfeits. Using Coach as an example...so you've seen their signature handbags with the CC all over it. A counterfeit will have the CC logo...a knock off will have a GG.
Over the past few years I have seen the counterfeits at mall kiosks be replaced by knock offs.
However, any kiosk or store that still sells counterfeits are indeed breaking the law. If you write a letter to mall management, they will be gone within a week.

LLindaC~I would if I could get you some of that wine.
BTW~since you are heading to NYC with your kids consider The Tenement Museum in the LES. It is a fabulous exhibit and geared to kids. We headed to Katz's for lunch after the TM and then to Canal Street for the "purchses".

I'm just really curious about something, and I hope some of the legal eagles out there can explain this: If it's illegal to sell something, how can it be legal to buy it? I'm trying to come up with parallel cases, but really can't think of any. (For example, it was illegal for people in speakeasies to be buying the run rum, right?)

I second the bid for the Tenement Museum. Fantastic.
Also suggest you try to get uptown to The Cloisters. Quite possibly the most spectacular view in the City of...trees and such. To see the lights, go to the Rainbow Grill for drinks (well, orange juice for the youngsters.)
Also recommend that you check out dailycandy.com for sample sales in NYC. THAT is where you will find some fantastic buys from designers. Or Century 21 downtown.

Thanks for the clarification about the difference between knockoffs and counterfit.
And I second (third?) the recommendation for Katz Deli. Yum. The Tennement Museum looks cool too. I wanted to go when I went to NYC, but my travelling companion did not. I am saving it for a future trip.

Re: 'The Gates': <<it has become a punchline for tacky, pointless excess>>
Funny... a lot of people have similar sentiments about vain, decadent, ostentatious obscenely overpriced garments, accessories, or anything else for that matter.
