as far as sedona goes, 3 days there is more than enough you may want to do some local easy hiking walking which is very doable. you may also want to take a jeep tour. when i'm in that part of the world i like monument valley but that would cut out sedona. You may not be able to hike the narrows in May, water could be too high or rough due to spring run off so i would have an alternate plan, perhaps a trail ride etc. the narrows with a 6 year old could be treacherous. while in sedona also drive to oak creek canyon. nice stop. you are also near sunset crater another nice side trip (although i think closer to th grand canyon) enjoy

Zion is my favorite place in the southwest, and The Narrows is my favorite hike in Utah - but I agree with justme22 that the spring run off could prevent that hike.
We hiked Angles Landing (almost to the top) which was breathtaking, and scary - but worth every second. Definitely not for little ones, or people afraid of heights, but really spectacular. Can't speak about Lake Powell much - we had a picnic there and then continued our trip into all the southern Utah parks - Canyonlands, Bryce, etc. Have a great time! |
In one day at Page we did the a.m. smooth water float trip, (Beautiful, but 6 year old might get a little bored), Antelope Canyon - don't miss it, and the short hike to horseshoe bend. In my mind, there is nothing else to do here unless you are going to rent a boat or take a boat cruise on the lake.

Hi Jil,
Yes, high water in Spring could mean hiking a different trail. But - there are lots of nice hikes at Zion suitable for kids. Riverwalk, Emerald Pools, Canyon Overlook, Weeping Rock, all short and easy, if you don't want to do Angel's Landing with a 6 year old. Have fun! |
Thanks for all your reply.NoW I am wondering if I should skip Page and do Bryce instead and than drive to GC?

I would do Bryce Canyon instead of Lake Powell. The hikes there are really pretty. It is definitely a different landscape from Zion.
Also, consider how strong your 6 y.o. is. I saw many cranky 6 y.o. olds who were overtired from too much hiking. Then again, I saw some six year olds who were big for their age and able to handle the hikes. Use your judgment. Also, I am not a fan of Sedona. It is rather crowded with too many tacky souvenirs and outlet strip malls. If you are going to cut days, I would cut them in Sedona. Also, unless you are an experienced hiker, do not attempt Angel's Landing, especially with a 6 y.o. A woman fell to her death from Angel's Landing last year. So far, about twelve people have fallen to their death from that treacherous hike. |
I would definitely pick Bryce over Lake Powell and see if you can do a horseback ride with the 6 y.o. (I think you can). Favorite part of our trip for 8 and 10 year old children.
We haven't been to Sedona so I can't comment but maybe you could rearrange your GC accommodations and move it back and spend time in Bryce and Lake Powell. |
i love bryce. and the half day trail ride is great. i'd cut sedona days.

I was gona do Bryce, but it is another 5 hours to south Rim.So we will do Zion- Lake Powell and take it easy spend 1 night at Marriott see Antelope canyon and than Page to GC south rim is only 2 hours.
