$1000 or less change of scenery
 

If you had $1000 or less, a solo traveller where would you go? Need a break from work but I've had extra expenses. I could go somewhere to actively explore or just soak in atmosphere. I live near NYC, so in the past, I've just taken my little fistful of dollars and seen shows, music, museums, quirky restuarants. Right now, I'd like to have the change that comes only from leaving your own home behind though. Any suggestions?

I'm in Seattle so my cost effective locations are not the same as from yours, but I go solo to either PV Mexico or Honolulu for one week on that budget, for a mid-winter sunbreak every year.

How much time do you have for the break?

Not sure of time or year or number of days you were thinking.

If you are looking for city, maybe hop the train to Philly, DC or Boston. If you want a bit of scenery and outdoor country, what about Vermont, Brandywine Valley(Delaware/Pennsyvania) with Longwood Gardens and Winterthur, or Nantucket/Cape Cod or similar.

Yes, I posted on several sites, to get a well-rounded results. fun4all4- - good suggestions. I'm an east coast gal, so I'd probably want a change. I was considering some of those for the fall though.

Anyone have any suggestions for New Mexico, California or Seattle that would fint in these parameters? 1 week? The airfare may do me in. I am not an FF customer, just never accumulate enough.

Isn't this trip in March? If yes, the weather is miserable here at that time.

How about San Francisco? I love to go there for even a long-weekend.

San Francisco

Jet Blue to Long Beach. Rent a car. You should be able to find reasonable rates for accommodations in many coastal locations, such as Cambria or San Luis Obispo since it isn't "summer", and in downtown Los Angeles over the weekend.

There are trips to Mexico that might fit your budget. Even all inclusive.

Texas! How about flying into Austin, renting a car and then exploring the hill country? Towns like Comfort, Wimberley, and Fredericksburg provide a slower pace, great food, and lots of B&B's or cottage rentals. Not to mention quite a few lakes. You could also drive an hour south of Austin and spend a couple days in San Antonio strolling the river walk and visiting the missions. Or, in the reverse, SA could be your base.

Another option might be Little Rock. It's a small town that's reviving it's downtown/riverfront community. You could spend a couple days there and then drive an hour east to Hot Springs for bath houses and spas.

If you'd like to stay on the East Coast, Newport News, VA, Charleston, SC, Tampa, Fla., or Savannah, GA might work, too.

kelliebellie, I tried to make a plug for Mexico, because $1000 goes a lot further there... but the request was to stay within the U.S.

Since you live near NYC, I assume you would be flying from there. They seem to have pretty good airfare deals (compared to Austin.) What are San Francisco. You can get a hotel many different areas and you could get around with public transport. It is a fabulous place to soak in the atmosphere.

You also could visit Austin. I would definitely rent a place like the Omni Hotel which is in the heart of downtown so you can get around easily. My only concern is that if you wanted to venture out, a rental car might tip the budget. There are many things to see and do here including The Capitol Bldg, Blanton Art Museum, Zilker Park, clubs with live music and lots of restaurants.

I meant to say, what about San Francisco. I didn't mean to sound like Miss Teen South Carolina!

I certainly understand wanting to get out of the area - that would be great. :-)I was just thinking that it may be tough to go somewhere for a week where you have to fly for under $1000. But, I am sure there are deals out there - I am a bit picky about accommodations and meals so I don't think I could do it, but others are more savvy than I.

why not take a greyhound bus to Montreal for a few days?? you can leave your city (country in fact) explore a great city, eat great food, soak in a different culture, try to learn a few words in french etc. It's not too far from home and you could easily do it with 1000$. You don't need a rental car while you're there as public transport is very efficient and will take you anywhere in the city you want to go. If you get a hotel relatively close to city center then you can even walk around for most of your time and see quite a bunch of stuff.

Layla, that sounds like a great idea to go to Montreal. Ever since visiting Paris a few years ago, I have wanted to see Montreal. French flavor without the distance! Not sure if ninasdream is looking to go out of the country or not.
