1000 Islands Vacation
We are planning a vacation for this summer to the 1000 Islands region. Having never been there, I would love recommendations for hotels, attractions, etc. We really want to see the locks on the St. Lawrence River, and try fishing as a family. Do we need fishing licenses?

Thousand Islands is alot of fun. Check out hotels in Alexandria Bay or Clayton. Food is ok but not great. One very fun thing to do is to take a sightseeing boat to Boldt Castle (& learn the legend of 1000 Island dressing). Google NYS fishing licenses to learn the law on that. Boats going thru locks is very interesting even for kids.

I would recommend staying in Alexandria Bay ... more to do there for a family. Most of the hotels are pretty basic, but I recall that the Riveredge Resort is nice; right on the river with balconies overlooking the water. Bonnie Castle is also nice, but more for a couple's get-a-way. You will need fishing licenses which you can get at a local bait shop near town.

Alex Bay is in the heart of the 1000 Islands and may be a better location with kids. Clayton, about 10 miles south on Rte 12, is scenic but more laid back. The 2 biggest resorts are Riveredge and Bonnie Castle. You can get a 3 day fishing license. Be sure to take a Boat tour on Uncle Sam Boats-they stop at Boldt Castle. You could take a day trip to Massena to visit the locks- definitely worth it. Massena is about an hour and a half north of Alex Bay on Rte 12. Good idea to book a room early, try to get a room with a channel view. Enjoy this beautiful area!
