100 best things to in NYC

Well, as Paris and Italy were so successful (Ireland ist still going on), I would love to have your suggestions for NYC as I plan to return after a very long absence. I am sure it has changed a lot. NYC is for Europeans what Paris seems to be for you: Just great and a big must.I would also appreciate some "don't dos". Thanks a lot.

90. Don't take a cab during rush hour. The subway is faster and much cheaper.

91. Don't take the subway late at night. A cab is faster and much safer.
Howard,
What is the three-card monte scam?

Caitlin Feb 26th, 2001 08:49 AM

92. Eat classic New York street food: hand-shaved Italian ice in Soho in the summer, hot roasted chestnuts in the winter
93. Have an authentic New York pizza experience at Lombardi's on Spring St. or Patsy Grimaldi's
94. Grab a croissant as you walk up Fifth Ave. and have breakfast at Tiffany's
95. Do the Chelsea art galleries
96. Go to Coney Island and try to imagine what it was like in its heydey
97. Explore the amazing ethnic diversity--restaurants, groceries, houses of worship--in Jackson Heights, Queens
98. Travel to New York's past at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum
99. Visit the Holocaust memorial near Battery Park City
100. Stroll the city all day with no particular destination in mind, checking out the buildings, the people, the community gardens...life in the city.

Come back and do it all again!

Three-card monte is a variation of the old shell game, where you guess under which shell the little pea or some other small object is. You'll see these con artists work their little scam on unsuspecting tourists. Fifth Avenue on Sundays is a prime ripoff spot and day for it. They'll make it look like you can't lose, and in fact, will let you win initially. But believe, if you play, you'll lose. I guarantee it!

Ursula Feb 26th, 2001 09:20 AM

Again, thanks a lot to all of you. I suppose we shall better plan to stay at least for 10 if not 14 days - or come back for a second row. Finally, it's not that far from Europe, I'm only annoyed by the jetlag.

howard Feb 26th, 2001 12:26 PM

Postscript on three-card-monte: There's a more common variation in NYC with three playing where you try to guess where a certain card is. Again, don't try to beat them. You can't. If you see someone winning, it's a shill! If you see them, just walk on by!
