10 hours layover in Anchorage. What can I do?

Hello all,

I am flying from Iceland to Seattle and I have have a layover of 10 hours 25 min in Anchorage airport. I will be landing in ANC at 4:20 PM and my connecting flight is at 2:45 AM the next morning. I understand that the sun sets pretty late in July. I prefer not to sit in the terminal all night.

Any suggestions on what to do for this amount of time? Any help/suggestion will be appreciated.

Thanks.

1. You could rent a car and drive down Turnagain Arm, one of the most scenic drives in North America, to Girdwood, have a meal, then return.

2. You could take a cab to downtown Anchorage and walk around - Captain Cook statue, Bootlegger's Cove, look at the gardens in front of the houses along the Park Strip, get a meal and return to the airport.

3. If your budget can handle it, a never-to-be-forgotten experience can be had by going on a flightseeing trip on a floatplane from Lake Hood, next to the airport. Several operators will even pick you up at the airport (or downtown hotels) and bring you to the plane.

I'll think of more.

Just to add to very good info, if you are interested in Alaskan history, there is a very good museum downtown--"the state's largest".
