I think Los Angeles has LOADS more to offer than San Diego in general. But maybe not for what this person is seeking.

I agree, Suze. San Diego is a good for a day & a night, but does have a great Navel history if you're into that. The OP should try to get baseball tickets there. That stadium is fantastic.

San Diego to Big Sur would be a long haul and I wouldn't want to drive the last winding part tired. San Diego to Cambria is reasonable and isn't a bad drive except getting through LA. We've also made the coast drive countless times in the last few years as we relocated from LA to Carmel and had to travel back and forth often (mostly on 101 but sometimes taking Hwy 1). Perhaps the OP could shorten San Diego to 2 nights and start up the coast on Day 3.
