10 days in Arizona in September
My husband and I are going to a function for 2 days in Flagstaff Arizona and plan to take 8 more days for a vacation. We have never been in that area of the US before. What is doable and sensible when it comes to getting around? Is it too late to rent an RV and get sites to park it close to the G.Canyon? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. If you were us what would you do?

If you are interested in prehistoric Indian sites you have a wonderful selection from which to choose. Montezuma Castle and Well, Wupatki, Sunset Crater Volcano, Tuzigoot, Cayon de Chelley & Casa Grande Ruin. Other national parks in AZ are Saguaro, Oregon Pipe & Chiricahua. Info on all these sites can be found at www.nps.gov and pull down Arizona.
Outside of Sedona the Nat'l Forest Service has sites for rock art at V Bar V Ranch and Palatki & Honanki. Info at http://www.redrockcountry.org/recrea.../v-bar-v.shtml. There is also a campground nearby. You can reserve a campground at Grand Canyon through this site http://www.reserveamerica.com/campgroundSearch.do |
Cruise America http://www.cruiseamerica.com/ rents RV's from Flagstaff so you can check online to see if they have any available. There are also RV rentals in Las Vegas from Cruise America and El Monte RV http://www.elmonterv.com/
If you are visiting after Labor day, Sept. 7th this year, you probably could get campsites at the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks. These three parks would make a great 8 day trip. Utahtea |
Thank you photodog and utahtea. We'll look into these recommendation and figure it out. We are going after Labor Day. We are flying into Phoenix. Mapquest says it is a 4 hour drive to the Grand Canyon. Do you think that is correct? Wondering if we will run into traffic as we get closer to G.C.?

You really shouldn't have much problem after Labor Day and it is about a 4 hour drive from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon.
Let me know if you have any other motorhome questions, we've had one for the last 16 years. Utahtea |
We'll be visiting the Sedona area for the third time this year and agree with their comments as well. We come up from Phoenix and base from Sedona about 2 hrs from Phx. The drive to the Grand Canyon is a couple of hours from there but there are such terrific areas to stop and either take in the view (including the drive to/from Flagstaff -Sedona on Rte 89) or walk around the towns, including Jerome (south of Sedona-former mining town on a mountainside) and Williams (near Grand Canyon; can take train into GC from there..nice to do once anyways!). Definitely take in the spectacular red rocks of Sedona and the prehistoric sites. P.S. We are going in Sept as well; you might want to add a bit of extra time for leaving Phx area as I understand one of the highways is going to have major construction delays starting that month (check AAA website).

You will definitely want to drive HWY 12 through Grand Escalante Natl Monument. It is fabulous. The North Rim Campground is beautiful. We opted for a different campground, because we thought we wanted electric. but we were dissapointed with it (Kaibab RV Village) Definitely avoid that one. We said we will stay in the Northern Rim Campground next time. Kodacrome State Park is beautiful and has great showers (on the Bryce Canyon HWY)
