As a life long Californian, (northern), don't forget to visit Marin County, Sonoma and Napa. You may also consider staying in Marin and taking the ferry to SF instead of driving for your daily tours. You'll disembark at the Ferry Building to begin your SF adventure. Discover Marin County culture (through the rainbow tunnel) as part of your adventure........... If you've been to Provence France, this area resembles all that it is.........farm to table. clean air and easy navigation.

There are many more Roman ruins and Medieval villages in Provence than in Marin. Also more lavender & sunflower fields. Stu Dudley |

Thanks so much for all the replies, very helpful. As we are travelling from Ireland, I think we will need the amount of days specified in San Fran, as we will most likely be tired and not doing much for the first day, so would be nice to enjoy San Fran properly for another three days after that!
I am thinking now whether we should just drive to San Luis Obispo to see it, but maybe stay in Santa Barbara that night instead? we have confirmed that there will be definitely no one-way drop off fee, so no need to worry about that. Im just wondering would anyone know what is the norm that Hertz hold as a deposit on your credit card for the duration of the rental period? |
There's not really much to see in San Luis Obispo. It's a pleasant college town for an hour or two.

I agree with skipping SLO.

Personally, I would leave off the Las Vegas portion of the trip and add those days into the other stops.
