1 hours 37 mins layaway in Miami International airport

Hi,

I am a US citizen who will be back from south america on 03/26/12 at 5 am to Miami International airport and have a connecting flight at 6:37 am, Where I am from (SF) this would be more than enough since I never have any checked luggage, but how about Miami? Thanks.

The things I worry the most is the custom back to miami and the custom search again when trying to go to my connecting flight. Do I need to be totally exit the interantional airport and walk to the domestic one and board again. Is it a very big airport? Thanks.

We've only come in in the evening and the place then is jam packed with lines out the wahzoo getting through customs. It may be airport rush hour, but we needed every bit of our 3 hour layover, and in none of the 3 occasions did our bags make our connecting flight to Tampa. They all joined us the next day. I despise the Miami Airport, and yes it's spread out. We were coming in on American in all occasions, and it was a long walk from the international area to domestic, but we did not exit the terminal, and as we were instructed to leave our bags within a roped off area after customs, there wasn't another search. Coming back through Dallas this year we did have to go through TSA again, but it was all a piece of cake compared to Miami..

There was a lot of construction and maybe things have improved, and/or your arrival hour might be less busy than ours. I hope for your sake that is the case!

My main concern is since I have a differnet airline when I transfer, do I need to do the whole custom check in again, or I can just show them my boarding pass after I pass though the inbound custom?

You need to ask the airlines if they are part of one system - and if the first airline can issue a boarding pass for the connecting flight.

It also depends on how long it will take you to get through Immigration - typically much longer than customs. I wonder how many agents will be on duty at 6:30 am? And how many passengers will be US vs foreign.

I generally find the 'bottle neck' in Miami to be security. The lines are generally brutal, although at that hour of the morning you should be ok.

Personally, I'd look for a later flight out of Miami.

Hi Jean,

It is kinda too late... It is just that from my experience, it is always quick, that's why I never taken account that it might be brutal elsewhere...

The way the custom area for would I be able to access the front person if I decide to ask the favor to go infront? Thanks.
