1 - 1 1/2 days in Cincinnati
 

I am going to be in Ohio for 1 to 1 1/2 days during Veteran's Day weekend. I plan on going to the Art Museum and the Underground Railroad Museum. Are there any other must sees. Also, I would like some casual places to eat. I am traveling alone and don't want any fancy meals. Any local favorites?

If you are going to the art museum in Eden Park, a short walk away is Mt. Adams where there are many casual eating places. One of my favorites is Mt. Adams Grill.

Across the river in Northern Kentucky is Newport on the Levee

with restaurants, movie theatre, comedy club, aquarium etc.

Another restaurant that is a favorite is the Boathouse (Montgomery Ribs) which is on the Ohio side of the river.
Also, try Graeter's ice cream and Skyline Chili (located in many locations) and a definite favorite.

Also, if you tell us if you will have a car or the area where you will be staying, it would be helpful to point you to things in that area. The weather here right now is great and the colors on the trees is beautiful this year -- hope some of it will remain by the time you visit.

I will have a car and I am staying at the Westin Cincinnati.

Cincinati Playhouse/Playhouse in the Park is often good theater. Teak is enjoyable if you like Thai. Also, check out Cincinnati Ballet. Jungle Jim's can be fun for an unusual gourmet/ethnic food market experience. Sunday buffet at Orchids is nice.

In the downtown area you might want to check out the Contemporary Art Center or Aronoff to see if there is anything that would interest you there on the dates you are coming. A good casual restaurant is Nicholson's Tavern & Pub.

Another place to visit is the Union Terminal, used to be the train terminal, but now houses the historical society, museum and omnimax among other things.

Another restaurant in the Mt.Adams area is the Rookwood Pottery. I think they may be under new management, but it is an interesting place to eat.

If you do the Newport, Ky route, there is a restaurant that is a favorite.
Pompilio's -- italian food -- a scene from Rainman was filmed there.

There is also a time line dating from prehistoric times along a walkway by the Ohio River to the west of the Boathouse Restaurant.

You might try Jack Quinn's in Covington for an Irish meal-it's very good. Also, Indigo's is good and has restaurants on Dixie Hwy in Ft. Wright and in Hyde Park. One of my favorite places for very casual, hole in the wall type food, but excellent burgers is Arthur's and it is right off Hyde Park Square. Mix of locals and XU students. GREAT burgers, but seriously a hole in the wall! (I eat there with my parents when I'm in town-I'm 30 and my parents are nearly 60, so there's quite a mix). One place not to miss for food is Montgomery Inn for ribs. Fantastic! There is one on the river(the boathouse) and one on Montgomery road. The river is closer-they generally do not take reservations. And do try Graeter's-it's wonderful! One thing about Cincinnati chili-I LOVE it, but my spouse did not grow up with it and does not-he is from the southwest. They put cinnamon and sometimes chocolate in the chilli, so it is really different. I like Gold Star MUCH better than Skyline, but that's a personal preference-Skyline is more popular. Another good place is Teller's for moderately priced food-it is also on Hyde Park Square.

The museum of natural history is very good in Cincinnati and I believe has an exhibit on cincinnati. I have always like it.

Mt Adams is VERY hilly, so if you are going to go there (and I would ) have a standard transmission-a manual will be hard to manage unless you are from San Fran. The Blind Lemon is a fun bar if youa re interested in a drink, but very small.

Rookwood pottery is a very good place to go as well.

The Newport Aquarium is really cool. The have the only shark ray in the Western Hemisphere. There's a review at wheretogousa.com

Looks like I'm late on this one, but thanks for thinking of me. A lot of good advice was given, enjoylife, so I hope you enjoyed my hometown. Please let us all know what you did and what you thought. There aren't that many posts about Cincinnati and I'm always curious to hear visitors' impressions.
