Vacation with baby in September - where to?
My husband and I would like to do a vacation for our anniversary the first week of September. We have a baby who will be 5 months at that time and have never travelled with her. We would love to do a trip to Europe since September is a great time to go but we're worried about the long flight, time change, etc. Has anyone succesfully done a trip like this with an infant? Are there any other places you can reccommend for this time of year? We are open to any suggestions and want a nice week to relax, eat good food and ideally be somewhere we can enjoy sitting on a balcony while the baby is napping or sleeping at night.. Thanks for the help!

I see nothing that indicates the OP is confining her question to Europe thursdaysd. In fact, the contrary is clearly indicated. " Are there any other places you can reccommend for this time of year?" That includes all of the world.
Where are you travelling from Lauren? What kind of total budget you have in mind? Other than a balcony what are your interests?
Obviously, people have and do travel with babies. How enjoyable it is is another question. Obviously, there are issues to consider. The shorter the flight, the better would seem to make sense.
But to get 'Trip Ideas' you need to provide more info on budget and what your interested in. Do you just want a beach and sun? Do you want to visit a city and explore it? etc.

while there are things like funerals and weddings that necessitate traveling with a baby I wouldn't vacation with a child as their care requires a lot of time and takes away from the experience and they will not remember the trip in any meaningful way..

The OP says she would love to visit Europe. I have seen several posters who could answer her question on the Europe board. QED. Have you traveled with small baby, Improviser? Because if not you're only qualified to keep quiet.

We are from New York and are aware she would need a passport. We were considering Bellagio on Lake Como Italy - have been there before and love it. Quaint, good food, shopping, gorgeous views...but logistics of getting there aren't the best...We also love Paris but are worried about being tied to the hotel for feedings and naps.

I agree - the Travel Tips forum does not see a lot of traffic. Not to say that you won't get sound information here, but you would see a greater diversity of opinion if you post in the various destination forums.

Yawn, the same old 'post on a geographic branch' responses again and again.
WHAT DOES 'TRIP IDEAS' MEAN TO YOU PEOPLE?
The OP has NOT confined it to Europe but specifically said 'or any other places for this time of year'.
If you gave a thought to the problems of travelling with a child you would not keep insisting on Europe but instead be encouraging the OP to find somewhere CLOSER TO HOME.
For a first trip with a 5 month old baby I would be looking for somewhere close, somewhere without difficult logistics to getting there and somewhere that gave me all the facilities to make it easy with the baby.
In other words prioritize making it easy first, location second.
Again, depending on interests of which you have now mentioned that you like 'quaint, good food, shopping and gorgeous views' Lauren, it should not be that difficult to find somewhere closer for your first 'travel with baby' experience.
Why do you even need to leave the USA? There are plenty of quaint, good food, shopping and gorgeous views to be found in your own backyard.
Learning to travel with a child is like anything else you have to learn. First you take baby steps, you don't start out running.
A week at a coastal village in a rental cottage in Maine. Or a few hours by plane, a rental on the west coast.
Here is an example. http://www.wavecrestresort.com/ Have you ever spent a week in the San Diego-La Jolla-Del Mar area before?
That property is right on a cliff overlooking the beach. Sunset every night. Shopping and dining steps away from the door. A rental car for day trips into La Jolla or San Diego. There are countless things to see/do in the area.
A fully functional apartment rental to make life easy with the baby and yes, balconies or patios where you can sit sipping a 'sundowner' as the baby sleeps.

Look, the OP suggested Europe, not me. So I advised that posting on the Europe forum would be a good idea. Indeed, I suggested posting on the "various destination forums" - which might include the USA.

Babies don't tend to deal with jet lag well. Some friends brought their baby from the US to Europe and it took close to a month for the poor lil' guy to acclimate. Another thing to consider is the possibly high temps and scant availability of air conditioning.
I'd seriously consider other destinations that are less likely to stress out a 5 month old.

Well yes, that is the best suggestion, since that's how Fodor's forums are organized and where a poster will get the most replies.

Thanks everyone for the help. I was looking for both feedback from anyone who has taken an infant overseas as well as other suggestions. Since we only have a week or so we have decided it's not worth the trip to Europe.

I am still single but my sis and my brother-in-law have enjoyed this kind of a trip with the baby just 7 months old. They went to Europe and still admit that was the most beautiful vacation they have ever opted for. And with the baby it became ever more beautiful and memorable.
