We are landing in NYC from a cruise and I dread having to fly back to Boston.. Any ideas which airlines are the most lenient weight wise... or...would we be better coming back by Amtrack or renting a car....

Problem with going by train is you have to haul all your own luggage around with you. If you have a lot and it's overweight I don't see that as a solution.

I don't know of any airlines that are "lenient weight wise". Just be ready to pay the fees, is all.

What about shipping some items home so that your luggage is within the weight limits?

I have been on many cruises. Several of them have been 12 nights in length with a hotel stay pre and post. I have always been able to keep my luggage within the allowable weight for air travel.

None of the airlines will allow you to check a bag over 50 pounds anymore without paying a lot extra, and almost all of them (except for Southwest and JetBlue) charge to check every bag. The best solution would be to take a single suitcase that does not exceed 50 pounds. I have to be honest and tell you that I can't even imagine why you'd want to travel with more. I'm not trying to be a scold, but if you are worried both about schlepping the bag and the cost, you'd be doing yourself a favor by packing a little lighter. You can carry a bag and personal item for free. Ultimately, it's your decision.

I'm with the other posters that a train is a pain with large, heavy bags. But if you don't mind portering your own bags and are willing to book your Acela ticket in advance, there are some decent online deals now. Otherwise, I'd try JetBlue. They have the most lenient baggage restricions I can think of and fly from JFK. You can get a transfer through the ship so you don't have to worry about getting to the airport.

If your suitcase is just a little overweight, I've already taken the heaviest things out and carried them on in a shopping bag as my personal item. Looked nasty, but worked.
