Suggestions for family w/teenagers trip out West - never been there!

Jump to last reply

Hi everyone. Looking to go to a trip out West since we live in Florida and local travel and cruises to Caribbean are not unusual for us. will be husband and sons are 16 & 18. Wanting to combine city fun and national park vistas!
Looking at either:
1) Las Vegas, Hoover Dam, GC, Bryce, Zion OR
2) San Fran, Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf, Yosemite, maybe Giant's game
3) Maybe Yellowstone, but I don't want to hike the whole time! I want some city life too!

husband and I have been to #1. totally ok with doing it again.
husband has been to #2 San Fran. Never the national park but the has been to sites in San Fran
none of us have been to Yellowstone but heard it fills up fast....can't do 5 days taking pics of beautiful scenery. Have to hike or raft or mulepack or something.

LV/GC trip appears more affordable. love to put Phoenix in there for a baseball game.
Do you recommend renting a car to travel between locations? I really like the convenience of a Grey Line tour, railroad tour that incorporates hikes and rafting, etc. I did that before from Vegas to GC. Very convenient.
My son graduated from HS and is attending summer college so unfortunately we are limited in our time frame...roughly 6-7 days with one day being travel coming back because we lose three hours and have to connect flights to Florida.

Do you recommend renting a car to travel between locations? I really like the convenience of a Grey Line tour from Vegas or Phoenix, railroad tour or overnight tour that incorporates hikes and rafting, etc..... I won't camp in a tent :-) Stayed at several hotels in Vegas. Last one was the Wynn...nice.

Did I mention my kids have never been on a plane, so OMG...that itself will be a unique experience for them. Although Vegas is not great for kids, walking through the various hotels could just be one day for us. My husband and I have been to Vegas for work. He's been to San Fran. I have not. all locations are good and have no preference.

What should they see if they've never seen any topography or site except Florida or the Bahamas? (except for travel baseball trips up the east coast).
