Honeymooning on a Shoe String Budget?

Hello Everyone!

I am new to this site and very new to traveling outside my small scope of the world. My best friend recommended the site to me and swears by the tips and advice he received here.

My fiance and I will be getting married at the end of October 2008. He has traveled somewhat, he served in the Air Force. I, on the other hand have not been out of the country. Our budget is extremely tight! We have allocated about $3,000 altogether for the ENTIRE honeymoon. I wouldn't mind staying somewhat local meaning places in Pennsylvania, Colorado, Florida, etc. but he definitely wants to go OUT of the country. We are considering places like Mexico, Jamaica, Bahams, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Fiji, etc.

For me, I would love to be in a place that is beautiful, do horseback riding on the beach, a fire at night, beautiful blue water, etc. Somewhere with nice places to see and to be inspired. I like to draw. Given my fiance's temperament, I'm guessing he's about the same. We are not into clubbing or hanging out at bars much. He sometimes gets bored rather easily so it needs to be a place with some activity that we can tap into but the kind where we can go at our pace. I hope that makes sense! Oh, we are looking to go for a solid week, 7 days.

I have some medical issues and need to be mindful of the things I eat. I was hoping to find a place that will have lots of organic produce and fresh seafood or at least lots of options.

If any one knows of a resort or a place to suggest, PLEASE let me know.

THANK YOU!

Congrats on your upcoming marriage

There is no way Fiji will work on a $3000 budget, but I think some of your other options might be manageable.

I would do some research on Mexico and the Caribbean and then post specific questions on those forum. This "Honeymoons and Weddings" forum doesn't get too much attention.

Good luck!

Thanks so much Pijeta. I will do that. I have done a lot of internet searching but still feel at a loss.

I've been lurking on other threads and definitely want to look into St. John's and St. Croix.

Thanks again!!!

I can help with St John! It is beautiful there and you would love it. Plenty of places for you be inspired and draw

There are only two large hotel/resorts on the island (The Westin and Caneel Bay). While those would probably stretch your $3000 budget, you could easily rent a villa and stay within that price range. We rented from http://www.caribbeanvilla.com/villas.html and couldn't have been happier, but just googling "villas and St John" you will be overwhelmed at all of your options.

I believe there is a horseback riding stable on the Coral Bay side of the island, but we did not do that.

There are not a lot of places to eat on the island, so you may struggle with your condition, but there is a grocery store so maybe that would help ?

If you get antsy on St John, you can easily ferry over to St Thomas (where you'll land and have to ferry from anyway). Or you can take a day charter to the BVI's.

Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions

Me again -- I just noticed your other thread that you may be interested in ECO accommodations. That works on St John as well! There are two tent campgrounds that I know of: Cinnamon Bay and Maho Bay.

We didn't stay at either one, but we saw them and they look really fun. While they don't have air conditioning and I'm not sure about the bathrooms, etc., they are right on the water and are also a great way to spend your money wisely.

Enjoy

Wow, Pijeta, thank you SOOOO much! I really like the pictures in Maho Bay. I can't wait to sit and check this out.

You are right about the website stuff. I have already poured HOURS upon HOURS looking at B&B's in Pennsylvania and other locations. It has been really overwhelming.

At least at this site, you can get feedback from people who've actually been to many of the places they recommend.
