Help! 1st time trip to NYC, what to do, see, taste?? All in 7 days!
I need an itinerary for my first time trip to NYC. It's for my daughter's 16th b-day and we have been planning this since she was 8 years old! I want to make it extra special.
We are going with another mother/daughter who have been there before. Nice thing is they are spending the first 3-4 days w/ us, then my daughter and I get to spend the last 3-4 days just the two of us! YAY!
So needless to say, they have already done the 'usual' tourist stuff. They do want to go to China town, Little Italy, The MET, a bike ride through Central Park and take in a Broadway show. What would you suggest for the first 3-4 days of the trip? After the 3rd or 4th day they will go back home and we can then do the more traditional tourist 'stuff'.
We like shopping, eating (of course!), we love being outdoors, we want to see, taste and everything in between while we are there. Please let me know the best 'tours' to take, which ones to stay away from and if we should buy a pass for traveling on the subway? What are the best Broadway shows for two adults and two 16 years olds.
OMG! I hope someone can help me plan this trip! I am feeling very excited and a bit overwhelmed. I want to do a lot, without feeling like we're going so fast we're not enjoying the ride! Also, any tips about shopping in China town? We definitely have to eat some pizza and eat a hot dog from one of the 'street vendors'. Silly I know, but I see it in the movies! Plus, any other information you'd find useful.
Thank you so much in advance for all your advice. I am so glad I found this site!

Not much help here but I'm a Californian and all my life New Yorkers who come here are always going on about how much better their pizza is than ours.
I was determined to try the pizza. Darn! It was fantastic. In fact, it was so good I had a slice every day. For breakfast I stopped at this little Indian place near my SIL's home and let this delightful woman feed me.
Don't miss the pizza. I'm ruined for pizza at home now. Hot dogs, not so much.
For great ideas for eating and doing in NYC go to the US forum and search New York. I think Aduchamp has written volumes about his city. Have fun in NYC.
My husband and I spent our time at museums.

Eat at the Carnegie Deli. They are world famous (check out their website).
Take the Classic Yankee Stadium Tour. It doesn't matter if you are a baseball fan, it's a great tour and a huge part of New York history. Better yet, go see a game!

I've found that the discounts at www.broadwaybox.com can be almost as good as TKTS, without having to spend time in line.

Happyyellowgirl: You will get the NYC experts if you re-post over on the United States forum and tag it for "New York".
This board is more for general travel tips --not destination-specific topics. Many, MANY more fodorites read the USA forum than this one which is slooooow in comparison.

New York's definitely a very exciting place to visit! There are lots of resources out there that can help you plan your trip -- I use Yelp a lot to check out reviews of food and entertainment places.
In my opinion though, some must-eats include Shake Shack (great burgers and fries, but prepared to wait in line!), Ippudo Ramen (japanese cuisine), and the food truck -- yes food truck -- on 53rd and 6th (chicken over rice, halal food).
As for the Metro, it depends on how much you plan to move around by subway. If you don't want to make estimates of your expenditure now, you can wait out 1 or 2 days and see how much you spend? You can then compare that to the deal you get with the 7-day pass (Check out http://www.mta.info/metrocard/mcgtreng.htm#unlimited).
Finally, check out this link for interesting ideas for shopping in china town!

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions -- I'll be glad to help.

Walk the Brooklyn Bridge (there are great areas on the Brooklyn side when you get off- Dumbo, Brooklyn Heights, and a gorgeous Promenade and park)
Ride the Staten Island Ferry. More Great views.
Both free.

Enjoy summer nights at the High Line Park.
Entrance on 14th St. and 9th Ave.. around there.
The Park used to be a railway above ground.
On Tuesday nights they have stargazing with the Astronomy club.
Beautiful, beautiful...

Financial District/Wall St. area, Gramercy Park, SoHo, Metropolitan Museum, MoMA, Tenement Museum (Low East Side). Not much Italy left in Little Italy at this time of the year except the restaurants (my favorite - Paesano).
Keep in mind that the weather could be not for much walking, plan on taking a boat during the day (Circle Line, Staten Island ferry, Liberty island, plenty of interesting places up Hudson) or hide in a museum.

For any Broadway shows, be sure to get your tickets early in the morning if you use TKTS. Also check out villagevoice.com/music for any concerts. Your daughter may be in luck if one one of her favorite bands is performing there. A show at MSG will surely be a long lasting memory.
