Where to go in January with almost 2 year old - no cookie cutter resorts!
 

We (me, my husband, our will be 22 month old daughter, and my mother in law) are looking for a unique place to go in January. My MIL will be visiting from Australia and is a very seasoned traveler. My husband and I are former backpackers, but now that we have a little one, we're looking for something family friendly but still off the beaten path. It would be nice to go someplace with mild weather but definitely does not need to be hot. All of us love unique places where we can explore real local culture, food & wine, town or country, but are still looking for something affordable. Finding a cottage/apartment with 2 bedrooms in one spot for the week works best with a toddler, rather than bouncing around various hotels. We'd be flying from New York. No cookie cutter resorts please! We want to experience the real life of the place we go to :)

What country are you thinking of? If US, what region?

I'm not bound to any particular country. We thought of Italy (Tuscany in particular) but it might be too cold. We're pretty hardy about travel in the off season but it's tough if everything is shut down and it gets dark so early. We also thought of Spain, Central America, or even Marrakech.

Why do you have a visit to India? There you will be able to explored to different culture and customs. Everything will be new for you in India. You can see many things from the anicent world.

Flying from NYC with a toddler to more than a 3-hour-time change is courting disaster. Do you know what the flight times will be?! Is your toddler's diet accustomed to, e.g., indian food? Does you spend alot of time at home with your toddler 'off the beaten path'? If not, this is not the time to start. Perhaps a resort in central america. If your todder is not happy, you won't be either.
