Where should I spend my 50th birthday in mid December?
Well, I'm hitting Big 50 and want to have a memorable, adventurous and fun time somewhere in the world. I have 7-10 days to do it. I love wildlife, hiking, sailing, biking, and maybe getting pampered a little without spending my entire life savings. Any suggestions?

If you are traveling solo, head for Hawai'i. You can see/do all of your list without breaking the bank. For solo travel, I like staying in HI hostels. http://www.hostelsaloha.com/
The other warm weather option would be on the Baja in Mexico. |
Vietnam or Thailand.

Hopefully suze will see this post. She is really good at finding nice tropical places on a budget.
I might recommend that you look into a bike trip - there are a bunch of companies that do them, and everyone I know that's done one has loved it. Try searching on Vermont bike tours - I think they go by VBT these days. They are a company with a long standing good reputation and I think they do international trips. If you like to ride horseback try Cross Country International. They have fantastic domestic and international week-long inn-to-inn rides that are wonderfully memorable. I did two of those as a solo traveller and can recommend them easily. (Also there's an Icelandic horse farm in Vermont that does week long trips, but of course it's more fun to go to Iceland for that) |
Hey, here I am spcfa ;-)
I love Puerto Vallarta myself, it has much of what you ask for (no biking) and the weather is excellent in December. My other personal favorite place is going to Waikiki in Hawaii. It also has all of what you ask for. I can do 7-10 days either place for a total budget of approx. $1500 including air (from Seattle), ground tranportation, hotel, food, and pocket money. BUT... where are you flying from? As far as budget and with only 7-10 days that makes a big difference for places to recommend. If you're on the east coast US, for example, the Caribbean, or even a European city, might work better for you. |

I think European countries would more of fit you. You can go to Scotland or Netherlands. I think it would be nice to go there and explore nature. That is if you really want to go out of the country. But there are good US states as well that you can do all those adventurous stuff you mentioned.

December means warm summer weather in Australia and New Zealand. You can find plenty of outdoor activities such as you like. Hawaii is also nice.

kathy411--I've been on many a bike trip with a specialized company where completing 50 miles or 100 miles on the big day has been part of a very joyful 50th. Doesn't matter if the person is single, a couple, or parent--good time is had by all lucky enough to share that accomplishment and milestone.
