What to pack for working on a cruise
 

Hey everyone,

I will be starting my first contract shortly working on a cruise ship. I've tried to read a lot of articles on what to pack, and how much to pack, but everything seems to say the same - alarm clock, 3 pairs of pants, sort of thing.

I'd be interested to know some of the odd things that I wouldn't think to pack that I will find myself needing or missing (wrinkle release spray etc.) Any an all ideas are welcome, as well as how much clothing is actually necessary to bring. I'm not quite sure of the space I'll have to store things, so it's hard to know what will fit easily.

Doesn't your employer help with this? As far as what you need to be working on a cruise. I'm thinking it's probably totally different than for someone GOING on a cruise as a passenger.

Do you wear a uniform for work?

Can't you ask your employer what size space you'll be living in?

I doubt you'll get many responses here, I recall just one regular poster whose kids worked on a cruise ship.

What job will you be doing? My daughter and son-in-law are musicians and have done several cruise sil gigs. You will be shs ring a cabin so will have minimal space. I will get in touch with my daughter and see if she has some tips.

I worked on a cruise ship ages ago for a 6 month stint and honestly you don't need much. They should be giving you any uniforms you need and if you have a uniform that gets wrinkled, the wrinkle release spray will be your best friend.

I would say the best thing you can bring is a journal and write every day. I had one and I cherish it. Bring Comfy shoes especially if you have to wear shoes they pick out. Anything you can bring to help your feet if you are standing up a lot.

The less you bring the better, storage is usually at a premium. Excited for you - working on a ship was one of the best things I have ever done. It's simply magical (and tough - but worth it). I know a few people who never quit!

Thanks guys! Sorry it has taken me so long to respond, but I finally got my ship information. I'll be starting work June 22nd on the Freedom for Carnival.

Mostly just looking for tips on anything that we take for granted everyday that I wouldn't think to bring (such as the wrinkle release spray). I know the cabin will be tiny and am prepared for that, I just want to try and make it as comfortable as possible. Anything helps! And thanks Triplogic for the journal suggestion! Great idea!

Well along those lines, I'd bring a selection of paperback books or a Kindle so I had things to read in any off-time.
