What to do with a "loaded car" in New York City

My daughter and I will be in Kingston, RI for Friends General Conference. We'd like to get into NYC to visit a friend - and I am reticent to drive as I'll have my bike on the back of my car, my camping gear, guitar, computer, etc. One thought I had was to haul all of the gear into my friend's apartment while I'm there - bike and all - and then find a safe spot for the car. Otherwise, I'd like to park it somewhere safe and then take the train into the city for an overnight. I've read some of the posts re: being in the city versus taking the train in - and most of those addressed leaving a car "without gear" - etc. I'm open to ideas. Thanks in advance!

I've seen your posts, all of which are this month, your first month of being on Fodor's.

Are you that paranoid, what with a 'safe' place to park in RI and going to NY?

Don't take all that crap with you, or put it in the trunk.

box409kincaid, you will get more visibility for this if you post in the UNITED STATES board, and tag it NEW YORK.

This "travel tips" : board is not very popular and is more for general suggestions like how do you travel with small kids, etc. You are looking for a location specific answer and there are lots of New Yorkers answering on the UNITED STATES board. Just copy and paste your question into a new post.

I'll get you started though. It depends on where your friend lives. Street parking is very tough to find in some parts of NYC , not so safe in others espcially with out of state license plates, and garages in my neighborhood cost about $40 per day. Also what kind of apartment does your friend live in? If it's a walkup, do you plan to get the bike up 2 or 3 flights in a narrow staircase? If it's a fancy building, you may not be allowed to bring a bike upstairs. Lots of things to consider but no matter where I am at least in the U.S I would not consider leaving so much stuff visible in a car left unattended for more than a couple hours. You can certainly lock some stuff in a trunk, but I would never leave a laptop computer or favorite guitar.

Kingston RI is where URI is, right? Do they have parking facilities you can use? Amtrak leaves from very near the campus

<B>nytraveler:</B> "<i>you will get more visibility for this if you post in the UNITED STATES board, and tag it NEW YORK.</i>"

That was already suggested on the OP's other thread. It looks like maybe s/he doesn't know what that means.

<B>box409kincaid:</B> See the 'Change Forum' pull down menu? Click on the that and post your questions over on the <u>United States</u> board.

Why does everyone question the topic of first time posters? We all had a first post at one time.

oops -- not nytraveler --nyer . .

Miss Green -- no one was 'questioning' it being a first timer. We are trying to help a first timer learn how the site works and that it would be to his advantage to post on a more effective board.

MissGreen - usually someone starts off by responding to a couple of posts, not writing two off the wall requests/comments.

Yes, I consider them off the wall.

Maybe you should post this on the US Forum. There may be new yorkers who know of a good garage.

No. You can't leave stuff in your car in a city. Doesn't matter which city. Doesn't matter if it's particularly valuable or not. You either need to find a secured/manned indoor garage or empty out the car.
