Two weeks to make a decision where to travel...
 

My husband is on a treatment break from his Chemo. The doc said this would be a good time to take him somewhere. I'm not thinking too straight and could use advice. I don't want to make it too hard on him, travel-wise, and am thinking a cruise. I heard there were places where you could find out about great prices on unsold cabins. But I haven't been able to locate these sites. I welcome any suggestions.

I suggest you post this on the Fodors Cruise Forum (which is pretty slow but there are some really knowledgable posters) but likely your best info would probably be on the Cruise Critic website.

We faced the same - our basics at the time were :
- somewhere / some trip where your husband don't require too much visit / physical activity
- some place where you can easily find a doctor
- some place where we could have access to 'good' food - by this we meant recently cooked and not microwaved - I suppose he'll be low on white cells...

You don't say where you're from, we chose a neighbouring country, but a cruise seems quite ok on three accounts.

pay attention to insurance - we found one at the time that covered chemio in case we had to be repatriated.

Adn get the most out of it !!! You need a break, both of you.

Do you think he'll be OK with flying (in order to get to where you could get on a cruise)?

Would a driving trip to somewhere closer be better?

Hi! I would try to get him in a first class seat - that is more comfortable for him. We recently flew to Vegas and had a stopover in Dallas - what a nightmare. They changed our gate to a different terminal (3 miles away?)and it was 45 minutes before boarding. We did have wheelchair assistance, but it was awful. I couldn't make it either so quickly, and one dear porter had to push us BOTH in wheelchairs. So, I do have to watch the connections We could drive somewhere but we live in Michigan and wanted to do something on our bucket list a bit farther away. Thanks pariswat I will check into the insurance options. I want to stay in the States though. It's been my lifetime dream to see whales, so an Alaska cruise might be an option. Thank you to those who replied so far. I appreciate your input!

(I can't believe I'm actually saying this ;) ) but have you considered Amtrak? There is great whale watching in California and along the Pacific coast and you can take Amtrak to the San Francisco Bay area.

Alaska cruise is a beautiful idea! Or you can see whales in season in the Seattle area on some of the islands, like the San Juans, might be another option.

You've already gotten some really suggestions -- anything that will make it easier!

One idea that I'll throw in the mix is a river / lake cruise. I have no idea what the options are, but if you're still in MI (as your profile indicates), it occurred to me that you might be able to take one of the Great Lakes / St. Lawrence waterway routes without too much difficulty. Or even boat one way, train back?

P.S. This may be one of the moments when it actually makes sense to work with a travel agent. Anything to take the heavy lifting off your plate!

kja makes a great point, talking to a travel agent would make everything much easier and save you the trouble of having to look through all options on your own.

Thank for the good thoughts and positive waves - they definitely are needed. His Chemo got pushed up a week :-( I want to go ahead anyway, but now I definitely need to make it easier on him to fly. You guys will probably think I'm nuts, but we are going to New Orleans for three nights. It's an easy 2-1/2 hr direct flight for us. And we have a friend who is performing there at the Saenger Theater.

Oh, New Orleans is SUCH a fun place -- what a great choice! Enjoy!!!
