Re the "3 oz" limit:

Yes you can take several 3 oz (or smaller) containers or the same item but they still need to fit in the 1 one quart bag. One way to deal with this issue is to use some solid toiletries. Stick deodorant vs roll-on; glossy lip balm vs lip gloss; powdered detergent packet or soap leaves vs liquid; solid vs liquid perfume; shaving bar vs cream. These dry or solid items can be packaged separately and not affect your limit.

Here's how it works for me: With respect to the sheets, I hate bad/itchy linens, especially if I'm somewhere very sunny and hot with inadequate air. Nothing is worse than a little bit of sunburn against pilled sheets. So, you are most welcome to call me a sheet snob.

With respect to the remote, I saw that show on Dateline, or was it 60 minutes, that said that, by far, the dirtiest thing in a hotel room, even in the very best and cleanest hotels was the remote. They carry everything from salmonella, to feces to other bodily fluids, because people eat, go to the loo, scratch, etc. and don't wash their hands. Ick gets stuck in the buttons on the remote and housekeeping, in general, NEVER cleans them. So, being a business traveler, I have started to notice the gross remotes. I was at one of the very best NYC hotels on Central Park South and when I picked up the remote, there was some gross greenish dried residue resembling (sorry) snot.

That was enough for me! So, I bag those babies every time!

And - as an update on the trial size packing - I found the niftiest replacement for a clear ziplock bag. It's a Clinique mesh zipped pouch that affixes to the inside of a makeup case. Liquids go in the mesh pouch and other items such as powders and solids go in the pockets of the case, so everything stays together. It's sturdy, transparent and zips. It fits neatly inside my other case and meets all of the TSA requirements. I've been through all of the major and most minor airports with it and it's never gotten a second glance.

I only carry on and use a case that is barely larger than a rolling computer bag. I can go for three nights in that bag with three business outfits and a spare pair of dress shoes.
