Supporting Countries that have Inspired Me
 

Having just returned from a trip to Africa I have a sense of responsibility to give a helping hand to the countries that enriched my life in such a profound way.

I am wondering if anyone else has felt the same desire.

And for those of you who have...

With so many aid agencies and volunteer organizations to support, how did you decide where your money/ time went?

Obviously, with any financial donation, one wants to be sure that the bulk of the donation goes to the people who need it, and not to administrative costs etc. Is that information available online?

I send my checks every month to several charities of my choice, after a simple internet search. Most of the US charities use 30-70% of donations for administrative expenses, and I am not that rich.

I feel the same sense of responsibility.

In Honduras, I support Rotary projects that are operated by people I know.

In Africa, my favourite charity is the Grandmother to Grandmother program run by the Stephen Lewis foundation. The founder is a former Canadian Ambassador to the UN who is well known for his deep love for Africa and his integrity. This program connects grandmothers (and other caring people) with grandmothers raising AIDs orphans.

Sadly, the poorest countries are those with most corruption. (see: www.transparency.org)

This means, a lot of aid flows into the wrong channels.

Maybe the best way to help the African countries is to travel and to spend money there.

what about foster a child or animals?
or take some things with you when you travel?
would never ever support an NGO which claims 30-70% for admin!
the max should be 20% for administration!
