Hello,

visiting overseas and got robbed, my ticket is gone and money what do I do? Have no contacts back in usa. Thanks for any real help.

1. Contact the airlines. They may be able to assist with replacing the plane ticket.

2. Find the Embassy of your home country (are you from the U.S.)?

3. Where DO you have contacts? Anyone, awhere? Friends or family you can call and ask them to wire money?

4. Look for temporary work to make a bit of cash.

5. Find a church or traveler's aid society and ask for assistance.

Those seem like good suggestions. I don't have anything to add, except, I'm so sorry that happened to you.

Good luck. I'm sure you will come across good helpful people if you follow the advice here.

Having not travelled overseas by myself, I had no help to offer Rhondel, but I am surprised that no one but Suze or Kaka had any advice or suggestions to offer. A lot of other questions get lots of advice. I can't imagine being overseas and stranded and getting two replies to my question.

Roegall - if you check the OP's other posts, you will see that he/she received additional advice to seek the appropriate Embassy and that the OP did just that and received assistance.

Also note that there are only a few regular posters to this board, so getting 2 posts of actual helpful information is pretty good.

Thanks toedtoes..I just can't imagine being in Rhondel's position and thought there had to more of you out there to help. I didn't realize the message was posted on other threads.

What country are you in and have you received help as of today?

Well, this was a difficult question to give any positive help to. I think it is safe to say that most of us here would not go traveling alone overseas without some kind of safety net to fall back on.

I agree Suze. Some tips on preventing this to happen:

1. Keep a small address book with names, addresses and phone numbers of friends and family. Don't count solely on your cell phone or pda, etc. as they can be stolen.

2. Don't carry ALL your cash for the trip in one place. If it's all on your person, and you get robbed, it will all be taken (including a money belt). Better to use your atm and withdraw a few days' worth of cash at a time. That way if you're robbed, you don't lose it all only a few days' worth.

3. Get a free checking account just for your travels and only put what your budget is in there. Keep any other money in your normal bank account. Keep the ATM for your normal account hidden away (inside pocket, etc.). That way if you get your free checking account ATM stolen or lost, you will have access to money in the interim.

I always travel alone in Italy and ALWAYS stay in a hotel that has individual safes in my room - carry 1/2 cash and ccards in a money belt and leave the other 1/2 in the safe - including a cash card and my passport. On one of my last trips, I joined a group tour and while I was standing next to a woman, she was robbed - they actually had the nerve to unzip a LARGE bag that she was wearing, dig their hands through it and remove her passport while she was traveling with about 12 of us - and NONE of us, including the gal, noticed anything out of the ordinary. She had to travel to Rome, from Lucca and wait three days until the Embassy was open. Needless to say, it wasn't fun and she had been warned by our host that the first thing we should do upon arrival is to leave 1/2 money and passport in the safe.

Anyway, glad Rhondel has received assistance.

Sorry to hear about that man. I got robbed in Thailand back in 2000. they took everything. what I'd do?
cancel travel checks and credit cards.
tips - your embassy is your best destination.
and make sure you make copies of tickets and passport and keep them seperated.
