Some Helpful Hints before Posting to Solo Traveler board

I thought I'd put this out there to help those posting on this board from getting the dreaded "try posting there instead of here".

This board does not get tons of posters. There are a group of solo travelers who tend to check out this board, but outside of that not many visit.

If your question is about finding lodging/airfare/activities/etc. in a certain place, you will get many more pertinent answers from the location-appropriate board (e.g., Asia, etc).

If you are looking for general advice about traveling solo - such as safety issues, dining, expenses, etc. - this is a good place to ask.

If you are asking about where to travel, you may or may not find your answer here:

For general "I have no idea where I want to go" questions, this is a good place to post because you'll get fewer answers (getting 141 responses all with a different destination is not usually that helpful) and they will be from fellow solo travelers.

For more specific, "I am going to Greece what should I see" questions, it will be more helpful to post on the location-appropriate board because more people will have been to Greece and can give you advice.

Most what to see, where to stay, where to eat responses won't differ between solo travelers and family/group travelers, so you're better off getting more responses rather than solo traveler only responses.

Hopefully this will help folks out.

P.S. For those responding to questions, instead of saying "no one visits this board", how about saying "the XX board will be better able to answer your question"? I guess it just sounds like we're a loser club here at the solo traveler otherwise. :)

Well said, Toedtoes!

<instead of saying "no one visits this board">

toedtoes, You know I appreciate your interest as a new forum member in continuing to try and bring life to this branch. And I'm sorry you don't appreciate my straight-forward approach, so will try to explain my thinking...

I hope my comment would provide an actual explanation as to why they aren't getting answers. If we simply direct them to post elsewhere, that doesn't tell them WHY I am making the suggestion.

That said, I wish we could "sticky note" your Helpful Hints to remain at the top of this branch (like some other forums provide) because you made a fine description of the kinds of discussions that get the most attention and response here.

Suze - I didn't mean that directed at you. :) I was just thinking out loud there that maybe there's another way of saying it that doesn't sound like this board doesn't respond to questions at all. It's just that we're pretty specific on the subject matter and we're not a large group. I agree that they need to know why they're not getting their answers - which is why I thought to post this thread. I was also thinking that by not saying "no one visits" we might encourage new people to stick around this board or check in once in a while and maybe we'd get this built up more. :)

I'm not offended but since I'm the one who usually posts exactly that comment, I was taking credit!

I think this board is the essence of quality vs. quantity. And toedtoes, I think you are an excellent advocate. Thanks for your continued efforts.

Thanks Catbert! I definitely agree about the quality vs. quantity. I am amazed at the knowledge the posters on this board have and would hate to lose this opportunity to share that knowledge.

hear-hear! i second catbert's reply! thanks for your excellent advocacy and clarity, toedtoes.

(btw, phonetically, would one say "toe-dee-toes" or "toad-toes"?)

toedtoes Dec 2nd, 2006 04:14 PM

Just_do_it - pronounced toad toes. Toed was the name of my cat and he had 2 extra toes on each foot... toedtoes :)
