Solo women traveler in Egypt and I'm scared to death!!

I'm planning to be in Egypt Dec 11-15 and after reading a lot of posts, I'm getting more scared. I haven't book my hotel yet because I'm debating to join an escorted tour. Any solo women travelers out there...would you comment on this? Also, if you take an escorted tour, which one would you recommend? Thanks in advance!!

I traveled to Egypt partially on my on and partially with Gate1. If you're really scared to death maybe you should try a combination. What, exactly, are you worried about? I didn't find my time alone in Cairo especially difficult.

Quite honestly, if I felt that scared I'd simply choose a different destination.

For me personally I would not want to join an escorted tour, so would rather pick places that I feel comfortable and confident to travel alone (western Europe, as example).

I wonder what exactly scares you also? The answer to that can change the response.

For example, if you're scared about staying at hotels alone, then that would happen anywhere and I would suggest that you try something closer to home for a weekend to see how you handle it.

If you're scared about the culture, then I would suggest talking to people who have been there (solo or not) and learn more about it.

As you're there for only 5 days, I don't think a combination would really work.

I'm curious to try & help, cl4udie, but we don't know WHY you are so scared... so it's hard to say.

Internet forums can be helpful, but I have found they can also end up stressing the negative (people more likely come home & post when things go wrong, than when everything goes smoothly on a trip).

I can relate to you! And sometimes, I'm not quite sure what I'm scared of! I'm traveling to Rome completely by myself in Dec. and occasionally I wonder if I should just cancel my trip. I've also been reading a LOT of posts online on various websites and I'm scared but I don't want fear to get in the way of a much deserved fabulous vacation. My advice is to learn from what you're reading. Be preapared! Read all the literature you can get your hands on regarding women who travelled solo. I recommend reading, Gusty Women, Saftey and Security for Female Travelers (you can check them out on Amazon or your local public library). Take a self defense class if possible. I'm also planning on going on a group escorted tour. You may also want to check out journeywoman.com. IMHO You're already taking a good step by posting here. Good luck & happy travels
