Solo Female Travel- Places to Avoid
What are locations(cities, countries, etc) females should generally avoid when travelling solo in their twenties? I love to travel, but am not especially aware of all the places I should try to get a male traveler to join me. I have traveled solo in Europe(France, Italy, England) with no more problems than the occasional unwanted cat call. Just looking for some thoughts on this- Thanks!

Do you have a specific country or city in mind that you're wondering about?
For me, all the places I would not be comfortable traveling solo (the middle east for example) are places I'm not interested in anyway. |
Try to avoid places where security or law enforcement is weak. Such places are usually the poor areas of Asia and the Far East, South America, Eastern Europe and most African countries. These areas do have fantastic sceneries but are not to be travelled alone in my opinion- even for men. I've been trying to decide on a place myself this year coz I'm travelling solo yet I still haven't made a decision yet mainly because Solo places should be (in my opinion) those that combine a huge variety of cultures in them.
If you love seclusion and peace, you have 2 options: Join a ranch in the American West to enjoy nature... or spring out to the Arabian Gulf Beaches that are located in Abu Dhabi or Dubai. This crap about the M.East being unsafe is WAY too bullshit especially when people who have never been there start blabbing.Of course, with the exception of Iraq, Iran and Saudi Arabia, the remaining countries offer stuff you wouldnt get anywhere else in the World. I travel a LOT but not Solo- I am this time. Wish you good luck and a lotta fun ! |
This crap about solo travel is WAY too bullshit... especially taking advice from someone who doesn't travel solo.

Hi suze,
I just looked in on this forum for the first time in a long while and see that things are still a bit on the weird side. Both the OP and this nasty poster mda are both unregistered..my conclusion is that someone wants to keep this forum going so they post under various screen names. so as you said, this crap about solo travel is way too b*s* :) Btw- I think your answer was just common sense, you travel where you feel comfortable. I agree! |
hi Scarlett, Yes somehow "solo traveler" branch just doesn't seem to fly here at Fodors for whatever reason.
I only look here when things are reeeaaaly slow at the office -LOL. Too bad because it could be a fantastic resource and addition to this site. mda's post just *made me* be rude, since they were critical of my opinion... yet admittedly are not even a "solo traveler" themselves. |
LOL suze, I know what you mean. You are not a rude person :)

I have travelled solo to china, cambodia and throughout the US. I never felt unsafe alone in SE asia, just the opposite. People went out of their way to be helpful. (I remember 2 young female hotel employees in Cambodia asking me where my husband was. When I told them he was waiting for me back in Bangkok, they were so shocked!! I remember them laughing at their boldness in asking the question. I told them in the US travelling alone is OK to do). I really believe you can go most places alone, as long as you take reasonable safety precautions.
