Rain Shoes
 

Hi - going to Budapest, Prague, Vienna, and Berlin Oct 29 to Nov 11, and from what I've read I need to be prepared for rain. My big concern is my feet. Lots of problems with them and hard to find comfortable shoes. When I do, they are typically expensive, so I don't want to ruin them in the rain. Should I pack rain boots? Any other solutions? All help appreciated!

Have run into "Agua Alta" in Venice

You might need boots for that although

you can get around on the platforms they put up

without them.

In 2003 I did the Venice Ultra Marathon during Agua Alta

Ran back into Venice from the mainland on big platforms

Did not get my feet wet though Agua Alta was everywhere.

For your particular situation, I might consider using old fashioned golashes (the plastic type that slip over your regular shoes). They wouldn't take up much room in the suitcase, maybe you wouldn't need them, but you'd be prepared.

The other option is trying to find a truly comfortable pair of waterproof boots or shoes, and yes that probably would be expensive, but maybe worth it to have?

I have a pair of Merrell's waterproof shoes that I love and are very comfortable. Mine are a few years old but I found a similar pair on zappos:

I've used mine for long periods of time with no foot pain and I can't say that often about shoes.

I adore my Merrell's with gore tex. They look and feel like regular tennis shoes (tan, not white) but the gore tex lining makes them pretty much waterproof.

They're not cheap, but they're not crazy expensive either. Plus they hold up really well. I think my last pair took about 3 years of hard use to start getting ragged.

I second Suze's recommendation for plastic overshoes. I think I got mine at Walmart so they were not expensive. I have rarely needed them but still, they are good to have--just in case.

After trying on what seemed like hundreds of boots, I finally found some I think will work on a trip to Maine last week. They are Toe Warmers made in Canada, and are guaranteed to be waterproof. They're lined with shearling so they should be warm. The toe box was a little larger than the Merrells, so they were comfortable too.
