Packing must haves for the summer?
 

What do you always pack for the summer?
I'm traveling to Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt) this summer and I have no idea what to pack other than a swimsuit to be honest.

assorted bottoms - lightweight linen or cotton capris, skirt, pants
assorted tops - sleeveless cotton blouses, lightweight t-shirts
a couple sundresses (if you wear those)
sandals - one comfortable for walking, one dressier for evening
sneakers & a few socks- if you are doing touring or intense walking
flip flops / bathing suit / bathing suit cover up / beach towel
something to sleep in
one linen jacket or light cardigan you wear on the plane

Passport, tickets, debit card, mobile phone...

It really depends on where I'm going and what I'm planning to do there. I brought sunscreen to Spain and knitted gloves to the Hebrides (after freezing in Orkney the year before). I made sure to have long pants and a longsleeved top for visiting the Vatican and a rainjacket to the Faroes. I've brought my own towel when staying in hostels, but not when staying in hotels. I took binoculars to the Faroes and will take them to the Azores but will not take them to Helsinki.

I used to take half a dozen paper books with me, then I discovered e-books...

Less clothes, more money.

Lightweight clothing. I prefer cottons and linens and a few of the Royal Robbins types of travel skirts like their Discovery Skirt which I have in a variety of colors and which are great for trekking around in during the day. I also have several shirts of the same or similar travel fabrics. I can fit both pieces into a ziplock, freezer-size, plastic bag.

I like to wear my flowing linens and cottons in the evening and out to nice dinners as they're dressier. I haven't been to Egypt, but have been to Africa four times (Tunisia/Morocco/Ghana) and have been going to S.E. Asia regularly since the 90s, so hot weather. As for Africa, I have packed basically the same for all of those countries that I have visited.

I also always pack at least one nice sarong as some places that I visit require a longer skirt to enter sites. So, I can take the sarong out and wrap it around the shorter skirt that I'm wearing and be able to enter.

I also agree on taking fewer clothes and more money.

Of course passport, money, cards, etc. whatever devices you need to have. Books to read (electronic or paperback). But I thought this question was about wardrobe since bathing suit was specifically mentioned.

A sarong and a straw hat for shad are good additions.

My hot weather experience is only in Mexico and the Caribbean so there wasn't a cultural implication in what I wore as is in some destinations.

As far as the "less clothes" being recommended by some I find I need more pieces for the heat because things actually get soaked with sweat, so I change more during a single day then in cooler climate travel.

That's a desert location so I'd stick with light weight long sleeves, long pants for sun protection. You won't be worrying about humidity or clothing not drying quickly.. it will dry overnight. For sure sunhats and sunglasses. Probably better if you ask on the geographic forums than here.

pack everything that can protect you from harsh sun such as hat, light clothing, its good to carry full sleeves to prevent tan, otherwise carry some chiffon scarfs to cover yourself up. Take loose cotton pants. Take a good pair of boots for the comfort and foot coverage, OTBT wedge boots is going to be a great option.
Take a bag that you can carry while traveling for carrying a water bottle.

First of all "Best of Luck" have a nice trip. Most important chiffon scarfs to cover you head and face, ticket, Map and Guide Book, sun glasses.

Except for those above mentioned well-known things, i think below tips are also very important, whatever the season is, hope it helps.
1. Copies of your personal certificate, just in case.
2. transportation and accommodation receipts, I guess people usually make reservation online, but it’s better to print a receipt in case your phone is out of power.
3. mosquito repellent
4. Ear plug, eye patch, neck pillow if you don’t sleep well.
5. Vacuum receive bag, it will save a lot space when packing.
6. Few plastic bag
7. Write important phone number in a paper, especially embassy’s address and contact.
8. Watch, so you don’t have to watch your phone frequently, it’s safe and power saving.
9. Universal switch plug
10. chocolate, to replenish energy all the time.
