I want to surprise him. we are in the NE and I want to take him somewhere unique, historical beautiful by casual to adventure and relax for a week either in May 2011 or earlier. Budget would be two thousand. Like many folks, i lost 1/2 my income. Thanks for ideas

How about Quebec City or Montreal? You get the romance of Paris for a lot less money. Quebec is a very old, atmospheric city that still retains the protective fortress-type walls. Montreal is more eclectic, mixing 21st century style with a beautiful old town, great jazz, great restaurants, great shopping, etc. Both cities are near beautiful countryside, so you could combine a few days in the city with a few days in the countryside. Montreal is about a 60-minute flight from New York; Quebec City is a bit further away.

My parents did a trip to Montreal and Quebec for a special anniversary. They took the Adirondack train to see some scenery on the way and really enjoyed it.

Another idea- what about Maine? Eastport is a lovely historical city with great hiking nearby (and lots of LOBSTER! Yum!)

Yes, Quebec City would be an excellent spot. We were there this past summer and really enjoyed our stay. It can certainly be done for a budget of $2,000 for a week's stay.

Also, enjoyed our visit to Kenebunkport, ME - small coastal fishing village with lots of charm - wonderful shops, interesting coast line, beautiful scenery and, of course, great lobster.

Also consider going to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket - romantic islands (quiet in May), interesting shops, historical points of interest plus plenty of activities if you wish.

If you want a more urban setting check out Boston - no place in the US has more historical significance.

I did a trip to Montreal then I felt that this is not a great place for wed anniversary. You should take another place for anniversary.
