You'll be fine as a single woman in Uganda. It doesn't even come close to PNG with regards to being wild and wacky.

Lucky you, Melissadill! PNG has been #1 on my bucket list for years and skipped over because of the danger. I will be going to several ports there on a Princess cruise in September but it definitely is not the same as your trip.
Uganda would be no problem for you. And the gorilla experience was wonderful. A Lonely Planet book on Uganda is your friend. :)

I was recently speaking to a co-worker that was from Uzbekistan and suggested that I visit. After reviewing some pictures, i was very tempted - it looked very beautiful.

But....really anywhere you choose, just read a guidebook and avoid those places. Go to small towns and wander - you will find out of the way spots with no tourist relatively easily.

Exotic and adventurous?

1. North Pole expedition.

2. Walk the Silk Road.

3. Do one of those overland Africa tours that take 30 weeks. http://www.truckafrica.com/london-to-cairo/

4. Walk from Nome to Patagonia.

How about climbing the Kilimanjaro or taking an African safari trip? I think they're quite adventurous and exotic.

If PNG is too dangerous, then I'd recommend Ethiopia. It's full of interesting and varied areas and is not at all dangerous. My husband and I traveled there independently several years ago. However, we did not get to the area where the native tribes insert large discs in their lips--can't think of the name at the moment. The Lonely Planet travel book on Ethiopia is your friend :)

How about South Africa and Cape Town. This area has wild regions where you can practice extreme sports. Other suggestions would be climbing the Kilimanjaro and the numerous extreme adventure activities in Australia: swimming with the sharks or crocodile river cruise. However, the most adventurous and extreme activity for me would be climbing the Himalayas.
