You can get free samples of Everyday Minerals at the website. 3 foundations, 1 blush and 1 concealer...just need to pay postage which is under $4.00. It's a great way to try this type of make-up without a big investment.

A good moisturizer for really sensitive skin is Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer, SPF 15. It's the ONLY moisturizer that never broke me out.

I put it on at night & don't use it during the day since I started w/the Bare Minerals.

katybird-

thanks for the tip! I just ordered my free samples from Everyday Minerals.

I've been interested in this kind of makeup for a while, but was hesitant to try the Bare Minerals brand that I can get at the Sephora store because it is relatively expensive, especially if I didn't like it.

**question from my igloo~

I have always had the combination skin and use powder or blotting paper once in a while.. does the mineral makeup affect the shininess factor?
I've been loyal to Prescriptives but I'm usualy open to trying new products, especially now that my skin is maturing a bit and I need the special effects lighting and so on..

I don't mind spending a fair amount for foundation.. I have semi sensitive skin which is fair too. anything to soften reality and help my skin look better!
:) thanks gang, J.

I have combination skin too & mineral make-up is great for the T-zone.

Carrybean Oct 18th, 2006 03:19 PM

Oh, as to the cost, mineral make-up lasts for AGES. You use so little of it that I'd imagine it's much cheaper in the long run.

I've been using Physicians Formula mineral makeup -- foundation -- and I am amazed at how well it covers. It feels light and smooth, but really does a great job. I'm sold on the whole mineral thing.

I buy mine at Eckerd's.

Oh boy, what a wealth of information. I'm really glad I asked this question!

NatureGirl: your husband works for QVC! I love QVC! Over the years, I've made some really good buys on QVC and HSN. Underwear, a vacuum cleaner, a great set of kitchen strainers... No jewelry but I like everythink I've bought on television.

Carrybean: I'm kind of biscuit shaped (oh, I hear an XTC song coming on) so I'll be careful not to look like a floured biscuit!

My skin is sort of pale and sallow, and now, at 56, I have bumps and a few breakouts. I can't believe it. I always had good skin, and now I have bumps. I also have some large pores, but not too many wrinkles.

I hope mineral make up will cover these bumps.

JJ5: that make up artist on What Not to Wear (is her name Carmondy?) is great. I wish she'd come over and show me her tricks. I am not good with make up. Too much old hippy buried deep down within me, I guess.

katybird: I'm ordering my free sample right now!

"Carrybean: I'm kind of biscuit shaped"

Nothing better than a good biscuit, so that's a nice thing to be.

JJ5 Oct 19th, 2006 06:51 AM

Thanks for the Cetaphil and other rec's. I will try.

tuscanlifeedit, if you have bumps you probably have to rid the surface of dead skin. As we age, the top layers do not slough off properly. That and big pores are the prime results. Try Susan Lucci's machine.

And yes, I too in the makeup department have tended to underdo, I never wore any foundation in my life to speak of. And I would pay a goodly sum to have Carmody do me. She knows how to highlight, which is very important in aging faces.

I have a drop dead beautiful girlfriend who is doing her makeup all wrong. Most of the time as you age, less is MUCH better, not more. And reflections are key.

It's too bad that some of us get caught in time warps with makeup or hair and can't see that somethings no longer work. I wish I could get her to Carmody as well.

I'll try the $4.00 too- just to see the difference. Thanks!

jetset1 Oct 19th, 2006 08:06 AM

"Less is more" is totally correct! I dropped eyeliner a few years ago.. and mine was always subtle but it really makes a huge difference just having a bit of mascara and lightly doing the lower lashes..

*anyway, there is a school nurse at an elementary school here, and she always wore severe makeup which aged her terribly, including the dreadful burgundy lipstick(the kids said she looked like a fancy witch)..

she dresses beautifully since she is quite petite and has very thick dark hair.. so I noticed her recently and noted that her hair was a softer brown, she had dumped the black raccoon liner, no dark lipstick, no dark blush and she looked fifteen years younger(she is in her mid fifties).. very flattering change.
I think everyone should go to a nice makeup counter of qualified artist and get some updates once a year.
My biggest challenge is hair.. I don't want it short because it is naturally curly, but too long is not good either.

I am going to try the mineral makeup and see if I like the coverage and overall effect. J.:)

Ever since I can remember people have thought I was younger than my age. I guess it's because I am small boned. Sometimes it was good thing, sometimes not. These days I'm sure that instead of looking like a well-preserved 51 year old, people must think I look like a 40 yo who has had a hard life. To top it off, my husband is 12 years younger than me and my son is only 9 yo, so most of my casual acquaintances are younger than me. It would be weird to go around announcing my age to everyone I meet, so I always know sooner or later I'll hear the inevitable and embarassing, "Oh, I thought you were so much younger." Maybe if I were better at hair and make-up, I wouldn't feel so self-conscious. This doesn't have anything to do with mineral makeup - just venting a little. Sorry.

Actually, I did send for the free samples Katybird mentioned. Thanks for that tip.

JJ5 Oct 19th, 2006 10:27 AM

Oh that's good to look younger than you are, regardless. Most of my life I have looked younger, but not now. I did until about 55.

THEN your face falls.LOL! Well you have to laugh, there is nothing else to do, unless you tolerate surgery or looking plastic, IMHO. Some cosmetic surgery is fine for others. But it isn't for me. YUCK!

My husband was younger too. Notice I said was. It wasn't a problem 20 years ago or more, but it became one.

So true that the black haired need to go lighter, almost universally. SOFTER, not pure black tones. And this is the kicker to MANY- you need to get SHORTER with your hair. The hollows in your face change and the long haired, with the shadows, can- before you know it- get the witchy look.

My daughter always had VERY long auburn shiny hair and at almost 40 is starting to see the light. But it's a fight. When she gets it no more than just touching her shoulder and framing shorter around her face- it makes her look 8 years younger.

It's hard to see yourself as others do, at times.

But the minerals is a BIG improvement for aging women especially. Those who are still wearing a layer or pancake type- well- it looks terrible and worse the older you get.

Thanks for sharing that info about the free samples katybird!

I just tried to checkout and pay for the shipping and it told me credit card payments have been disabled (which leaves paypal and “pay by mail”).

How did you all pay? Did it say the same thing for you? Maybe its just a temporary problem with the site (I tried it a few times)??

Thanks for your responses-I want to get my freebies ordered, haha!

:)

Devonmcj Oct 19th, 2006 10:40 AM

Naturgirl, I got the same message until I noticed I hadn't checked the mailing option. That might work for you.

NatureGirl19317 Oct 19th, 2006 11:12 AM

Thanks for the prompt response, devonmcj!!

Ok, I must have zero brain cells left.

I did select "secure online credit card payment" and got the "credits by credit card are not enabled."

Then I tried the "pay by mail" option and got "payments by mail are not enabled."

The only way it seems to let be progress is when I select paypal.

Huh?

:-/

What am I missing here?? Sorry to be such a pain!

NatureGirl19317 Oct 19th, 2006 11:21 AM

D'oh!

Hee haw!!!!

(insert emoticon of horses ass)

I see what youre saying with the shipping option!

Cool, thanks-you rock!

Well, I didn't know anything called "mineral makeup" existed until I opened this thread today. Now I am intrigued.

I'm in the very fair, easily break-out due to products camp. JJ5, Clinique always made me break out too, but Estee Lauder is fine for me (except something called Illusionist.)

So, this make-up will make me look younger? Because you know that is all I have to hear!

By the way, what are you all watching that you see these infomercials?

Carrybean Oct 19th, 2006 02:08 PM

There's an infomercial here on at 5:00 AM most mornings. Here's a tutorial with a real person demonstrating how to apply it.

Suki Oct 19th, 2006 02:38 PM

Thanks, carrybean, that was interesting. Does this take a long time to apply correctly?
