Luggage

In the market for a bit of a set. No need for luggage that costs more then whats inside.
Checked and carryon with wheels Must be a rare color or pattern.
Any brands you like or websites to go to?

jubilada Jul 16th, 2019 06:23 PM

Very unfancy , but I swear by IT . Comes in lots of patterns, inexpensive, very very light. The expandable models are amazing. Available online from the company, on Amazon, and at TJMaxx or Marshall’s.
Its all we use.

joto Jul 16th, 2019 06:45 PM

Our go to luggage is Eagle Creek. Not the cheapest, and not the lightest weight, but hard wearing and they have a good warranty, which we have used once for a zipper. We do use their packing cubes as well, which helps a lot with organising clothes and "stuff".

crefloors Jul 16th, 2019 07:29 PM

I ordered Travelpro luggage on line. It was about half of what I would pay in most stores. I also got two Travelpro pieces at Tuesday Morning at a ridiculously low price but THAT was just getting lucky. They don't have the same things all the time. I have seen good luggage on sale at Kohls.

I was trying to find the website I got my pieces from and can't find it.

Inakauaidavidababy Jul 16th, 2019 07:49 PM

Thanks everyone. You have given me some great things to research.

Briggs & Riley and Osprey have the best "lifetime" guarantees, if that matters to you. I have had to deal with B&R about damage caused by baggage handlers, and they were great.

HappyTrvlr Jul 17th, 2019 07:34 AM

I've used Travel Pro for years. A visit to an AWAY store now has me very interested in their products.

VonVan Jul 17th, 2019 08:23 AM

I read somewhere that flight crews often prefer TravelPro, and that always stuck with me.
I like mine, but it’s not the lightest weight —— bought inexpensively at TJMaxx. Mine is the ubiquitous black but I use a ”crime scene yellow” strap around it.
I once entertained myself at a CDG gate by watching the flight crew board and many did in fact use TravelPro.

charsuzan Jul 17th, 2019 08:40 AM

I got an IT bag at TJ Maxx. I can't decide if I like it or not.

suze Jul 17th, 2019 01:06 PM

I wonder why this was moved out of the Lounge, where many more people would reply? Instead of Travel Tips which no one reads??

I am an IT devote. There are quite a few different styles, so you can't really talk about liking the brand or not. It's more about the specific styles. I'm hooked on them because even the larger sized suitcases (24 or 26 inches) weigh less than 5 lbs. empty. The two I have have very unusual patterns and are unmistakable coming off the conveyor belt at the airport!!

The TravelPro brand the couple times I've tried it were way too heavy empty.

Really when I need a new bag I just head to TJ Maxx or Marshalls and see what they've got that day.

RM67 Jul 17th, 2019 01:22 PM

Hard sided
Four wheels
Grab handles on at least two adjacent sides
Combination lock
Lightweight

You don’t need an unusual pattern or colour - you just need tags, labels or ties that make your case stand out.

i like Samsonite

Melnq8 Jul 17th, 2019 01:32 PM

I like Samsonite too. In purple.

VonVan Jul 17th, 2019 01:54 PM

Suze, right now 59 viewers in The Lounge, 98 right here.
Perhaps Loungers are more likely to post?

suze Jul 17th, 2019 02:29 PM

Precisely! "Viewers" are not posters or necessarily actual participants. Often there are over 100 people on the Mexico branch, yet we can go several days without a new post.

suze Jul 17th, 2019 02:30 PM

I don't need an unusual pattern or color but I prefer them. My ITs are both extremely distinctive.

Actually - quite a few more have posted to it after it was moved than while it was in the Lounge. There were 3 responses (other than the OP's) in the Lounge and 10 posts since the move. So apparently no one is having any problems finding the thread here . . .

My niece has the away with the charger. I know some airlines are confused if you have to take the battery out or not. AA has a notice by the gate to remove but some say no. I like the feel of the bag,

I have a 20-inch lipault and do like it. I can fit a lot inside it but sometimes want a hard-sided bag.

Inakauaidavidababy Jul 17th, 2019 06:22 PM

Regardless, thank you for all the suggestions always welcome
well almost always
Went to the Outlets today and shopped bloomies outlet, tumi store and Sax5th and Sampsonite and Luggage Outlet and Tjmax which was surprising and Kohls and now looking online again before we pull the trigger. It was good for my husband to see some unclose to "get it". LOL

schmerl Jul 18th, 2019 05:35 AM

I love my very purple IT suitcase. It is the lightest suitcase I've ever had. That's important because I tend to be an over packer. :)

suze Jul 18th, 2019 06:51 AM

So apparently no one is having any problems finding the thread here... Because they are seeing the link that was left IN the Lounge? That's how I got here. These folks are not usually on the Travel Tips branch. So in fact their move strategy worked! Not a complaint just an observation, I like this branch and wish it was more active. But the Lounge needs every post it can get right now to survive too.

Back to this question... Luggage is something I really like to shop for in person. The two times I've bought a suitcase online I wasn't thrilled with them and donated them after a couple tries - wheels were not good, shape did not pack well, too heavy, etc. When I shop in person at TJ Maxx I drag the bag all around the store, open and close all the zippers, etc.

Inakauaidavidababy Jul 18th, 2019 10:42 AM

Suze, I'm not thrilled with the moving of this thread and find it an inconvenience to me to search out on another forum that is not a one key process. I would have preferred is be left where it was going fine.

suze Jul 18th, 2019 11:38 AM

Agree completely. I understand moving a thread if it is in the wrong forum. Like someone's asking about Paris on the United States board.

But I surely don't understand moving what I'd call a 'conversational' thread from the branch you usually post on, where you know people, to this nowhere branch that's basically the twilight zone :-)

My main carryon was bought ages ago and is Heys brand, polycarbonate clamshell spinner and small enough for international carryon dimensions. Sometimes it is too heavy for the new weight limits on the super low cost airlines. I know there are many brands that use the clamshell style but often they are too big and heavy because of expandable features and extra zippers. I like the two equal sides on the clam shell design vs the soft bags where most of the space is on one side. Fortunately this one is still kicking even though the built in lock is broken.

The last bag I bought was at one of those TJMaxx type stores. I tried to find the lightest wheeled bag that would hold a tripod I needed to bring. The brand was Skyway. Can't say I love it but it survived a bottle of red wine breaking in the trunk of my rental car, and I managed to get most of the stain out. One of the many issues I have with cloth bags. They just look beat after a few trips.

Costco often has good deals, but they're usually black.

Macross Jul 18th, 2019 01:37 PM

I only found this post because I click on new post and it was there. I never go to the travel tips forum.

misskdonkey Jul 20th, 2019 04:29 AM

We have Eastpac Tranverz 2 wheel medium 67cm bags, one each. They come in nice colours, my husband has a brown one and I have grey. We like them. The fit easily on trains and are easy the lift up the steps getting on, and fit in the trunk of all the cars we have hired, (all small sedans). We found it takes a bit of trial and error to pack them well, they can fall forward if you put to much in the front half. They are pretty lightweight and hardwearing, easy to handle and pull along. Very good wheels.

Inakauaidavidababy Jul 20th, 2019 09:35 AM

I'm having trouble posting my update

MoBro Jul 20th, 2019 10:58 AM

I like our Dakine bags. They come in colorful styles, and are rugged. What I like best is the ones we have which open up to two equal sides, each with a mesh zipper closure. Makes packing/unpacking so much easier, and one side isn't going to spill if you unzip it upside down.

mlgb Jul 21st, 2019 08:56 AM

Didn't realize DaKine made luggage since they've not been in my usual luggage shopping places. Do the fabric ones have two equal sides, or is it the hardsided ones only? I have a DaKIne "Jive Tote" that's great for travel, wear it close to my body for essentials like cellphone, keys, etc during travel. Never take it off so I don't leave it behind somewhere. Nice sturdy strap yet lightweight.

MoBro Jul 22nd, 2019 06:09 AM

Hi, mlgb. Yes, the Dakine bags we have are fabric. They make nice looking, rugged patterns, and no one will accidentally mistake my bag for theirs. I don’t know if it’s still true, but I heard they use recycled plastic to make their fabrics, which is what attracted us to Dakine years ago. DS liked their backpacks and camera bags.

mlgb Jul 22nd, 2019 06:12 AM

Thanks MoBro.

MoBro Jul 22nd, 2019 07:58 AM

I wanted to post a link, and looked on-line, but can't find the exact Dakine bag we have. I bought one last Christmas for DS, but don't see that type anymore. I hope they didn't discontinue the ones that open with two equal halves, and each half has a mesh zipper divider.

mlgb Jul 22nd, 2019 08:06 AM

If they've discontinued them, maybe they're on sale somewhere!

Most of the cloth bags by other manufacturers don't seem to be equal halves.

Inakauaidavidababy Jul 24th, 2019 10:20 AM

I ended up purchasing a Hey's 3 piece set and am planning on ordering their backpack that sips over the rollaway.

Thank you all for the many worthy suggestions. I enjoyed seeking them out on our live shop. My husband was quite good at searching the brands out.

Fodorite018 Aug 2nd, 2019 05:29 AM

Even though the OP found what they needed, I thought I would share what we found recently. My husband needed a very small bag, mostly for 1-2 night business trips. I found one at Costco that he absolutely loves. It is a hard sided bag that fits under the seat and is only $29. He rarely raves about products, but he loves this bag! The bag also can be expanded by 2 inches. Anyway, he has even taken it for a week to Germany and had enough room for his clothes and an extra pair of shoes. Business attire, so no shorts etc. Costco's website shows this for size:
  • Overall Dimensions (With Wheels & Handles): 17" H x 13" W x 8.9" D
Anyway, if anyone needs a very small bag, this is a great price and has held up.

kapia Sep 27th, 2019 05:30 AM

I do the research online too and insist on seeing them in person before buying. I bought a Targus one, which as far as I know is a decent brand. The one I have has a large enough main compartment, an extended compartment which I'm just happy to have although don't always end up using, fits the criteria for carry-on. Can't say much about quality yet because I've only had it for some time and didn't had to endure a lot of use yet, but pretty discouraged to find comments on here that the bag succumbed easily to damage. It wasn't pricey though and I could probably opt for Samsonite in the future.
