liquids on plane

Does the "3oz/qt bag" restriction apply only to carryons, and you can have additional, larger containers of liquids within your checked baggage?

MmePerdu Sep 29th, 2012 05:13 PM

Yes, only carry-on. I generally have larger items in my checked bag in doubled ziplock bags.

Yes, that's correct assuming you are talking about US rules, for traveling in the U.S. or leaving the U.S. for another country. Though I don't know of any, it's possible that another country's rules might be even stricter or prohibit things the U.S. does not. Also, there are some liquids like lighter fluid that the TSA doesn't allow in checked luggage either, so while your question sounds simple, it may not be

I mention this only because Fodors's has posters from around the world who travel all over the world.

Yes. Only for what you are taking on the plane. Checked luggage can have larger containers of liquids.

on return flights from outside of the USA, you may be able to purchase liquids such as wine, liquors etc in the airport duty free shop and carry it on board in the sealed plastic bag. Your purchase can be more than 3 oz. There is a limit on the amount of duty free alcohol you can bring into the USA, if you are over the limit you will pay a tax at customs.

The duty free shops are generally after security and passport control and near the departing gates.

However, it you make purchases while traveling and not at the airport just prior to departure, you will have to pack your liquids over 3oz in your checked luggage.
Within the USA, pack you larger liquids in your checked luggage.

In China, they take away all liquids. Even the ones you buy after security.

@Anita - since when?

Same in Mexico, even if you buy a bottle of water after security in the departure area, you may not carry it on the plane with you.
