iPhone & iPad Travel Apps?
So, I'm thinking about splurging on an iPad and stumbled upon this awesome video review for the Kayak iPad App via YouTube...

I use my iPhone for all sorts of travel apps: Kindle (great for reading on the plane), music and podcasts and movies (in flight entertainment), public transit maps and itinerary planners, weather, email, web access, voip phone calls, foreign language dictionaries and translators...
I journal on my iPhone as I travel, taking brief notes whenever I've got a few spare minutes. I take random photos to email immediately to friends. Take a photo of any important document (like your passport) and email it to yourself. |
I'm very new to the iPhone . . . appreciate any tips for international travel. I have the new 4g but am afraid to take it with me on vacation . . . afraid I would return home and find I had a $4,000 bill . . . or that I would get it stolen . . . or that I might fall in a river (I'm going to Laos).

I can't help with the waterways of southeast Asia, but you can avoid the $4,000 bill by making sure that you've got "data roaming" turned off. This is the default setting for my 3G iPhone and almost certainly is for yours as well.
You can still use your iPhone as a phone (you'll need to call your provider and have them activate it for international calls---you can check the per minute charges on line), and you can use wifi for any data functions without it being charged at all. You can also buy a set amount of data use for a set amount of money, but you'll want to do a "dummy" use period at home to see how quickly you use up your data. Note that both incoming and outgoing data are counted. In some areas wifi is less common that LAN connections. If you're hotel offers free (or even paid, buy I never bother with paid) internet access, you can use something called an AirPort to generate a small local wifi network right there in your hotel room. And of course you can still do any of the things that you'd normally do that don't require any sort of data access. A lot of the apps that I use internationally don't require web or phone access, so I don't have to worry about charges or find wifi. |

No, don't just put it in airplane mode.
Putting it in airplane mode will prevent data roaming, but that will also keep you from using the phone (if we're talking about an iPhone here). And if for some reason you had inadvertently activated data roaming and then turned off airplane mode to use the phone, you'd run the risk of data transfer. On a 3G iPhone, go to Settings > General > Network and there you'll see the Data Roaming setting. Make sure that it's off, and then you can use your phone without worrying about data charges. |

If you need a place to store important info on your iphone while abroad (cc numbers, ss number, etc), try Codebook. And it's secure enough that if you lose your iphone or it's stolen, you won't be exposed. Definitely worth its 2.99.
