Hostels - what do you do with your stuff?

Am considering staying in a hostel on my next trip to Germany. I will be solo, and have never stayed in a facility without my own room. Just wondering, how does your stuff stay secure while you are a) showering or using the bathrooms and b) while you are out for the day? Thanks for your help.

Top rated ones in Europe all pretty safe

but my general rule of thumb is to carry a money belt

put passport everything else of value in there

on my person at all times worn to the front under clothing.

travel light leave no expensvie electronics bling in the room

most top hostels have safes in the front office that are safe

I don't know about German hostels, but the hostels I've stayed at in Canada have a locker in the room where you can store your pack/luggage while you're out of the room. I would suggest checking with the hostels you are considering and see what they offer.

I only know from reading about staying in hostels on internet travel forums(!)

Some places have lockers.

Some people lock their backpacks to their bunks or have some kind of a 'mesh safe' deal over it, some people always carry their money & passport (yes even in to the bathroom or shower - there's even various hooks and waterproof moneybelts for this purpose).

Ask or read over on Thorn Tree at Lonely Planet for a greater percentage of people with this area of expertise (more than here at Fodor's).

Nearly all the ones I have stayed at have a locker which is assigned to the bed you sleep in. Carry a combination lock.
The lockers are big enough to hold a small suitcase and maybe a backpack.
If you have a rental car, use the trunk if the locker is too small. On train trips by myself, I use a backpack and a short double loop ended cable with the combo lock.

My rule of thumb is don't leave anything laying around. Either keep it with you or lock it in your locker - even for a brief trip down the hall to the bathroom.

Hostals are fine but they are known for petty theft.

A good padlock, like you use for lockers at school or at the gym is a must.
