Help required re VWP for UK citizen
I have booked flights to fly into USA from UK, however I have only booked a one way flight because we are then flying onto Boston from LA and then driving over to Niagara Falls and returning to the UK from Toronto in Canada. Will the return flight from Canada satisfy the VWP requirements under an Esta?
In other words when we are entering US at our first entry point with our Esta we will not have a return flight to UK booked from USA only our onward flight to Boston and then our return flight from Toronto? Can anyone envisage any problems? Tia |
I would think showing a return flight to the UK from anywhere would be sufficient. But then I'm not Customs and Border Control . . .
|
Agree, if you have an on onward flight you should be fine.
|
UK citizens also need an eTA for Canada.
|
I will be crossing by land into Canada so will I still need a Eta for Canada?
Also does anyone know how the US will record me as leaving the country when I cross over to Canada so that I am meeting the requirements of the VWP? |
Yes you need an eTA for Canada even crossing by land.
|
That is a surprise because I understood Eta was only needed for flying into Canada.
|
Yes I think you are right, it is only for flying,

The border is a mysterious world of information sharing. Generally your entry into Canada will serve to let the US know you have left.
https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/btb-pdf/...sfipi-eng.html The answers to various questions in this document might suggest the only problem you could have is explaining to US officials how you are getting from Boston into Canada if that travel does not require a pre-purchased ticket. That seems like an extreme longshot to me but I don’t count. https://uk.usembassy.gov/visas/non-i...gram-and-esta/ |
Would the airline be able to advise you? Or can you check with the American and/or Canadian consulate in England?
|
Thanks for all the help and the replies, I have got it all sorted now. The return airline ticket from Canada to UK is sufficient to show our departure from US and Canada exchange departure information with USA.

Bon voyage! And thanks for letting us know.
