Have you ever eaten at a domestic chain while abroad?

Got Montezumas revenge in Acapulco after eating at Dennys.

We also ate at a KFC in Xi'an as the food at our hotel was pretty bad.

I know people who routinely go to the local McDonalds in Europe so they can use the Wi-Fi. Remember when people used to tell us they like to "meet the locals" when they travel? McDonalds is definitely one place a lot of those "locals" actually go.

That's right.
With 1,500 McDonald's and 700 BK restaurants in Germany alone, it would be somewhat odd to assume that these existed to cater for US tourists.
I doubt that any locals eating there still consider them "American" or "foreign".
But also here you have the saying "How can they exist if no one goes there?" -- it's become somewhat of an official term, the McDonalds effect, i.e. that more people deny doing or consuming something that is considered less socially acceptable than what can be possible or plausible according to statistical data.

In Thailand I went to McDonalds for two reasons. First, I really wanted to see the difference (they are different all over the world). Secondly, after two weeks of overeating some of the strangest food, I wanted something familiar. The fires tasted the same, the burger was strange.

It was always a mystery for me how such 'restaurant' chain as McDonald's can be so different in every country
