Great Saint Bernard Pass / Lake Geneva / Northern Italy

Hello

It's a 'Special' birthday this year and I'm looking to retrace a childhood journey combined with a Dream Drive.

As a youngster every summer my family would drive from Abergavenny in Wales to Naples in Southern Italy to visit family.

I would be looking to fly to Northern Italy, pick up a hire car and then drive the Great Saint Bernard Pass, Lake Geneva, Milan and down to Naples.

If anyone has previously driven all or any part of this I'd really appreciate some route recommendations and general advice.

Many many thanks!

M

"I would be looking to fly to Northern Italy, pick up a hire car and then drive the Great Saint Bernard Pass, Lake Geneva, Milan and down to Naples."

I had to read that 3 times trying to figure out what your route was. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

You say you will fly into Northern Italy. OK, let's presume that means Milan. You say you would then drive NORTH across the St. Bernard into Switzerland and Lake Geneva. Then you would drive back SOUTH into Italy, through Milan AGAIN and down to Naples. Is that what you actually want to do?

Why not just fly into Geneva and drive south over the St. Bernard into Italy and then through Milan and on to Naples?

You either need to look at a map if your sense of geography in your head is not up to the task at hand or you made a mistake somewhere in what you wrote here.

Hi Dogeared

You're right...I was so exited at finding the forum I neglected to check (since posting I have taken a 'proper' look at a map).

I've realised we'd need to start in Switzerland as you suggested and not Northern Italy.

If any one has any tips / knowledge about travelling by road through these areas they'd be gratefully received.

Many thanks!

Before you commit to that route, you might want to look at drop off fees. You might want to do the Swiss section on their excellent trains, and pick up a car for Italy.
