Great book for solos..
I recently bought and started reading Tales of a Female Nomad, by Rita Golden Gelman.
She sort of changed her entire life after a divorce abd leaving L.A., and began to travel around the world.. I'm only a little ways into it, but I thought it might give some of you inspiration for those "newbies" who wonder how to go it alone. I'm interested in this forum too because my late mom travled extensively on her own. She taught at private schools for a few years, served briefly in the Peace Corps(two weeks, lol), and even learned languages later in life. I travel alone once a year, but so far, only in the U.S. It's a nice break and I like the freedom to do whatever I feel like each day. Best, J. |
Thanks for the tip, jetset1. I think solo travel is a nice break too. It is like a mini-vacation from input from others. You make up your own mind and learn to rely on yourself.
I love these "after divorce, new life" books. |
*and even learned languages later in life.*
Now those (to me) are words of real inspiration!! |
My widowed mother used to go to night school to learn Spanish when she was in her late 70's to early 80's. She learned a lot and could understand even more, I was proud of her.

That's what life is about! Living it! No matter what age we are. Cool for you to have such wonderful memories of your mamma.

I just finished it today.. what an amazing woman!! I think anyone considering solo travel would get a triple dose of encouragement and motivation after reading all her wonderful adventures over the last twenty years.. J.

Thank you for this post. After 4 years of marriage, I was just handed a surprise divorce, and I was wondering how I'd ever travel again. I will definitely put this on my "must read" list.

There's a great book called 50 Fly Solo by Teresa Rodriguez Williamson. She covers a few places in virtually every continent, except for Antartica. Funny and gives a lot of local suggestions that encourage you to meet people and get the most of the destination.
