If you can understand Italian this is a fantastic publication which illustrates hundreds of edible plants etc - http://www.areaparchi.it/pdf/quad9.pdf

I've been reading the publication and it is terrific!

Besides describing the edible plants in detail, it also has some mythology and wonderful recipes. I don't understand Italian so I've been spending some time on Google Translate not only reading the English version but also listening to the Italian version and my measly Italian vocab is slowly expanding! What a great way to learn a new language!! To pair it with something you love... in my case cooking, flowers, lore etc. I'm now searching for plant books in Russian if anyone has ideas.

Really a fun read, thanks nochblad!

I think I made a mistake. I believe post #29 is an aloe plant and not cactus. Like cactus, aloe is a succulent.

I also forgot to include my orange bougainvillea.

No plant left behind

Same mountain angle as post #40.

The marine layer has rolled in this morning covering all of the views -- pretty otherworldly when it gets like this.

Another otherworldly place is the Basilica Cistern in Istanbul.

It was a fluke that I ended up going to Istanbul but it turned out to be one of the highlights of my first trip to Europe. I went with three other people.

I almost didn't go because there was so much unrest around Taksim Square and some bombings weeks prior.

But I did go and the three days unraveled quickly, no bombings while there, and pushing through turned out to be one of the best traveling decisions I've made. I found Istanbul to be an intoxicating city of juxtapositions.

One night to dinner we sailed on the Bosphorus and watched all the city lights twinkle from the boat. It was a cool September evening and the waters were choppy!! But the views were majestic and enchanting, and the restaurant was airy, by the water and overlooked the colorful bridge.

I also got to meander around the bustling Grand Bazaar. It was a rush just walking there. I witnessed a mild haggling altercation go down between a vendor and one of my companions who decided he didn't want to buy the spices after all.

All in good fun. Next time I'll remember to go to another market called the Spice Bazaar. I hear it's even better.

On another night we had dinner at this restaurant called Beyti. They gave us the royal treatment. They were graceful and professional and proactive in making sure we had a great time. I felt like a queen! I had a dreamy time ... lots of liquor flowing abound. I was wearing a beautiful long dress. Good times.

We were served a lot of meat at this place. Can't say it didn't taste great. But I'm vegan now remember? No longer basking in the deliciously violent deaths of animals? So I'm not mentioning this place for the food but for the infinite joy in the human spirit!!!

Everyone was just laughing and having a non judgmental evening, even the opposing political talks didn't seem offensive or aggressive. At least not to me. I was pretty buzzed. I was really letting myself have it. I'm in Istanbul!

As we were heading out I saw a wall full of currency from different countries. I think from all the diplomats and special peoples who have dined there. Posted amongst the many displayed monies was a Philippine peso bill.

I liked the sight of that... a nice inclusive finish to a magical evening.

The energy in Istanbul was riveting and invigorating.

I found it to be an enthusiastic city. I'd love to go back, maybe to Cappadocia to see all the hot air balloons floating in the air or some other place just as entrancing.

I savor and relish the brief time I spent there. The hustle and resilience of the Turkish people remind me of a time when I experienced a coup d'etat in Manila during the Marcos dictatorship and eventual overthrow.

The vibe peaceful and intense at the same time...all the beauty and corruption converging, the powerful and powerless and the absolute battling of sheer forces all uniting in full solidarity.

As a child I still remember my mom wearing the symbolic yellow as she and her friends joined the sea of protestors to stand up against the Marcos regime. They were fierce and scared, hopeful and resolute. They were the People's Revolution making history.

It was a really spicy time for an 8 year old little girl.

But the best thing that happened to us in Istanbul is yet to come...

One of the things we noticed while we were in Istanbul was the abundance of cats!

There seemed to be an unusual number of cats roaming the lively streets ... day and night.

Up until then he had never seen so many cats in his life.

All of a sudden his mojo was through the roof!
