Driving trip from Eugene Or. thru redwoods to San Francisco
 

I am driving from Eugene Or. to San Francisco the first week of November. It is going to be a family trip with 3 generations. We want to drive through the Avenue of the Giants, of course, but really need some ideas on what else we wouldn't want to miss and hotels and food. Have one child (7) and parents and grandparents. Really appreciate all help offered. Concerned about weather and time it will take, any input concerning do's and don'ts helpful too.

The overall trip is about 580 miles and 11 hours not counting stops. It is about 4 hours down I-5 and US 199 to Crescent City and US 101. Two places you might want to visit other than the Avenue of the Giants http://www.aveofthegiants.com/
are The Oregon Caves off US 199 and "The Trees of Mystery".
The last time I stayed in this area was at the Ravenwood Motel in the little town of Klamath.
The room was nice enough but I was not impressed with the restaurant/bar across the street.
