Driving from London to Inverness and back

I was wondering if anybody can advise on a road trip from London to Inverness and possibly Isle of Skye? We are looking at approximately a week but also at a fairly cheap rate. I thought it may be better to base ourselves in self-catering accommodation and travel daily from there. Can anyone advise where to base ourselves and possibly a few worth-while ideas en route? I would be very grateful for any help.

Many thanks

If you haven't already done so, you should post this question on the Europe forum and tag it "United Kingdom". You're likely to get better answers there than in this forum which is for more generic tips and trip ideas.

This is a heck of a return trip in only a week! I'm not sure how much you can possibly see in such a short time. The roads up to the Scottish Borders are fairly good and fast, but once into the Highlands you're on "A" roads and it will be much slower.

Londo to Inverness alone is around 570 miles, then around a further 100 miles across country to Skye. Allowing for driving around these places and getting back to London, you must be looking at 1500 miles in 7 days.

I think you should rethink your itinerary, or you'll see Britain through the window of your car. This sort of mad dash will mean that you can't really see anywhere.

As ShelliDawn said, you need to post this on the Europe board. But really, you'd do much better to take the train to/from Scotland, and rent a car when you get there.

Thanks everyone! (I thought as much). I appreciate your help and will have a re-think. Yours sincerely :-)
