Disappointed in Travel Guard !!!!! Better Choice?
I always purchase travel insurance and usually buy it from AIG Travel Guard. I try to get a premium policy that covers trip interruption, trip cancellation, and trip delay. I buy the insurance over the phone and try to ask questions about the policy to be an informed consumer.
I did a road trip to Wyoming, Montana and Alberta CA. The trip was wonderful but had one significant glitch - my rental car had engine problems!!!! I was without a car for two days until I got a replacement car and had to get additional lodging and move my flight. After going to all the trouble of filing a claim of trip delay with AIG - come to find out that they only cover trip delays for "common carriers" - planes, trains, buses, cruise ships. They also cover terrorist attacks. But failure of a rental car - which is beyond my control - and which I think should be covered - it not covered! I am totally disgusted with them! Is there a better travel insurance company that covers trip delay or cancellation or interruption for something like rental car failure? Which company do you consider to be the best travel insurance company? |

You won’t find any Travel Insurance that covers this type of situation. |
We have had excellent service and claim resolution with Travel Guard but had read the fine print before purchasing.

I would think the car rental company would take some responsibility here, at the very least for loss of use for the two days you paid for a vehicle but did not have one. If you do’t get some satisfaction from them I would still complain to your credit card company. It is often possible to get your money back if you use your card and don’t receive what you paid for (in this case two days of rental).

...which I think should be covered ..... It is not what you think but what the policy says it covers. Reading the fine - three or four times - is critical. You should never assume that a policy covers something unless you have seen it in the written word. Even verbal assurances on the phone does not count. It is not TG's problem but yours.
The other insurance companies will be very similar. This should be the car rental problem. It was their car that failed. Why are you not going after them? |

This. I usually don't buy trip insurance other than if I feel I might want evacuation or accident insurance because I figure the chances of a successful claim are pretty small! |
