Clean sheets while traveling?
I've read about bedbugs and have decided to buy an allersac bed sack. How do I protect myself during my travel from hotel to hotel during my vacation? How do I know I'm not carrying the bugs with me? I won't be able to wash the sheets each night or two. I can put the sheets in a plastic bag but how do I know the outside of the sac didn't get anything? Do I just carefully "study" it? Any suggestions?

The short answer is you probably don't. And unless the plastic bag is airtight, the bed bugs can get out. Better, in my opinion, would be not to worry so much. But if you are a real worrier, then the answer is simply that you have to make time to put your sleepsack into a hot dryer for 30 minutes every time you change hotels. It's not the washing that gets rid of the bedbugs but rather the hot dryer.

thanks Doug. That's helpful to understand.

If your bedsack picks up bedbugs you are no better off than if you had slept on the hotel sheets. Worse off really because then you are moving them with you to the next place.
<How do I know I'm not carrying the bugs with me?> Well if you actually end up staying in a place with bed bugs you'd KNOW it right then. The only way not to move them on with you would be finding a laundry matt with modern washers and dryers and take care of your sleep sac. The better approach imho is just to inspect the bed and sheets when you arrive a hotel. Bedbugs leave tell-tale signs. Then don't stay there in the first place. |
Count me in the "real worrier" camp, it's nothing to simply check before getting too settled in the room.

And don't forget, bedbugs may not just be in the bed. They can get into your luggage too. Best to just not stay where there are bed bugs.

I use a kingsize allersac, have had it for about a year. I use it all the time and love it. It's been washed at least 40 times and is still comfy and effective. i keep mine in an extra large ziplock bag.If i need to have it cleaned i have it laundered or i pop it in a dryer in the hotel i'm staying at. I know that nothing can be 100% bed bug proof but i just like sleeping on my own sheets.
