Charleston/Savannah solo

I have to be in Atlanta for a couple of days in March for business so decided I should take the opportunity to visit Charleston and Savannah while there. I've wanted to go for years, so what a better time than mid March.

My only concern is being there solo. Garden and architectural tours and sampling of southern cuisine are my main reasons for wanting to go. I'm from the NW and have never been to the South.

Are these cities a good place to visit for ones first extended solo trip? I would like to stay in B&B's. Any suggestions on ones located in the central part of the city that may be especially good for solo travelers?
Many thanks for all suggestions.

Hi icygreg, I was in Charleston for the first time April 2005. It is a beautiful city! Although I was with a friend I have to say I think Charleston would be a great city to explore on ones own. With the various tours you no doubt will meet other people. I stayed at the Francis Marion Hotel which I enjoyed and which was in a good location for sightseeing. I don't know anything about the B&B's.

You might type GoTravel name into the search box (or Charleston SC) as she is a nearby resident and did a "tourist weekend" in Charleston and wrote a fantastic trip report which certainly added to our wonderful time in Charleston. Best wishes and enjoy the beautiful gardens, the striking architect and the fantastic food along with the very pleasant residents.

I just got back from a solo trip to Charleston and Savannah. Actually was a driving tour of the South, but spent over a week between Charleston and Savannah. I have a website that I used as I went: www.charlenehottel.com (when you click on the buttons, be sure to click on the date directly or it won't link).

It might give you some ideas. I found both cities great as a solo. I didn't stay at B&B's, nor did I really do any tours as such. I found the Gray Line Hop On/Off tours in Savannah a good deal and a good means of transportation. They will even pick you up at your hotel if you want.

I took Amtrak to Savannah and Charleston this past year alone. It was one of the loveliest trips I ever had.

On one of of the tours, I met two ladies who later became friends. We still keep in contact. Savannah citizens were so charming.
