Buenos Aires, where to stay

I have been thinking of going to Buenos Aires, by myself, since no one wants to go with me. What is a good area to stay in for a solo 65 year old women? I prefer less expensive lodgings, if available, and in a safe area.

I haven't been, but if I were going I'd head for the nearest bookstore and take a look at the Footprints and Lonely Planet guidebooks - as well as checking the destinations section of this website, of course! You might also look for podcasts of Samantha Brown's shows on iTunes.

Thanks, have bought the books, watched the TV shows, but in the past the advise on this forum has helped me plan european trips easier.

You are more likely to get more replies if you post on the Latin America forum, since the solo forum is one of the least frequented forums on Fodor's. Goodluck.

Buenos Aires is a really extended city with lots of things to see and do. I recommend Barrio Norte or Recoleta, both are very safe, unlike other areas.
Da Vinci Apartments is a good place to stay in that area, reasonably priced, and there are lots of restaurants, cafes, food stores, anything you may need, nearby.
You can also check the internet for short term rentals, BA is very tourist friendly. Just stick to the downtown areas!

Definitely post this over on the Latin American branch. A poster named Scarlett recently moved to BA. Hopefully she'll see your post.

Solo Traveler forum does not have as many participants as Europe or Latin America boards.

In case you didn't get any help over in the other sites, Buenos aires is very inexpensive to visit. Hotels, meals, and cabs are very cheap. Do your routine hotel searches but you can also look at places on vrbo.com. That's where I stayed when I went there and it was fine. I like Recoleta but looove Soho. That's where I'll stay next time.

We stayed last year at the Hotel Lafayette in Buenos Aires and loved it. It was very reasonable, safe area and lovely hotel. One of the top grocery stores was directly across the street and it was in the major area for shopping, dining, etc. without all of the hassles of the crowds. The hotel has a very nice breakfast buffet too. I will look for its address and phone but check out tripadvisor too.
Cabs were very inexpensive for the Recollecta cemetery area, etc.so when we did not walk we cabbed it and it worked out great. BA is one of my favorite cities!
