Best Travel TV show

I'm going to have to go with Anthony Bourdain's - NO RESERVATIONS. He's hilarious and can be such a bad-ass when he wants to be! Oh yea AND he goes to awesome places and eats awesome food!

Whats your favorite travel TV show?

dulciusexasperis Mar 28th, 2014 07:38 AM

Francesco da Mosto in the 3 BBC series (so far) that he has done. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-GW-q97mnA

The Venice series in particular (his home town) is the best I've ever seen on Venice.

suze Mar 28th, 2014 09:13 AM

I'm a huge fan, so with you on (anything) Anthony Bourdain. But I like most travel shows. Andrew Zimmern is fun in small doses. Not exactly a travel show, but I love Househunters International.

dulciusexasperis Mar 29th, 2014 08:44 AM

House Hunters International is a superficial look at moving abroad. It leaves out far more than it informs in terms of what is involved. In other words it's a 'fluff' program.

sparkchaser Mar 29th, 2014 09:14 AM

Vice

tomfuller Mar 29th, 2014 09:59 AM

For Europe it's hard to beat Rick Steeves on PBS.
For the rest of the world, Anthony is good even though he drinks too much quite often.

suze Mar 30th, 2014 07:57 AM

I really like watching Rick Steves Europe shows, thanks for the reminder, tomfuller.

Of course Househunters International is "fluff".

wunderbar2 Mar 30th, 2014 04:16 PM

I too enjoy House Hunters International, fluff maybe, but I like seeing what types of homes, apartments, etc are available. Sometimes it's fun to dream...which would you select.

Also like Rick Steves and I'm addicted to The Amazing Race, love getting a quick glance of so many interesting places.

MarthaT Mar 31st, 2014 07:38 AM

I like Rick Steves and Globetrekker.
I don't think Anthony Bourdain is making any more new shows.
I like HHI because like wonderbar I like to dream of living in some of the locations.
I am also addicted to Amazing Race and like it when they go somewhere I have been.

dulciusexasperis Mar 31st, 2014 08:19 AM

Michael Palin's series were good and Joanna Lumley's series on Greece well worth watching.

What's with the real estate, cooking and game shows? Those aren't travel shows, they just happen to take place in various locations.

I'm waiting to hear of a good TRAVEL show/series that I haven't heard of and could then check out. So far the only actual travel show mentioned other than those I have listed, is the Rick Steves series.

How about 'Long Way Round' with Ewan McGregor followed by the 'Long Way Down'? What about Charley Boorman's 'By Any Means'? Then there is 'Departures' which follows two backpackers.

The question as asked by travellife369 is a good one but so far the answers suck.

I am a fan of the old Lonely Planet series. Especially the ones with Ian Wright.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nW6h0FZIirE (it is in German, sorry)

Hell, any of the travel shows with Ian Wright is worth watching.

Michael Jackson's Beer Hunter is also very good.

Three Sheets with Zane Lamprey is also a favorite of mine.

It's old but I still like to watch it: Alby Mangels Adventure Bound https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJbG23qEry8

suze Mar 31st, 2014 09:20 AM

I like the Amazing Race too (some seasons better than others depending on both personalities of contestants and locations features).

Yeah, I liked the LP series. Speaking of LP, here is an article that just came out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSGCfq23VTM

The kid is impressive. He ain't gonna appeal to 50+ year old housewife tourists though. LOL

Here is one of his previous enterprises. http://www.outwildtv.com/
There are some great travel videos to be found there.

Oops, first link is incorrect. Here is the link to the article on Houghton.

<i>The kid is impressive. He ain't gonna appeal to 50+ year old housewife tourists though. </i>

Which is good because that was never LP's demographic.

Lonely Planet is a fantastic resource. I hope the new guy gets The Thorn Tree going strong again.

sparkchaser Apr 1st, 2014 07:57 AM

They need to bring back the PM function.

When I was in Aralsk, I did a house stay there and my fixer told me that the family hosted two young men from The Netehrlands and that their Land Cruiser broke down there and they had to stay an extra week. I knew who she was talking about from a post on Thorn Tree and when I got back home, I dropped the author a PM asking if that was him that the woman told me about. Sure enough it was and he told me that he and his companion left the Land Cruiser in Almaty and was trying to figure out a way to get it back. I was going to ask him for his contact info because that seemed like an excellent adventure but they took the PM system away and I was left with no way to contact him. Bummer. :(

suze Apr 1st, 2014 08:00 AM

That is too bad about the PM. Thorn Tree is a forum where I actually made an online friendship that went on for years. I've also met people thru Trip Advisor (exactly because they have the PM feature). That never happens here at Fodor's for me.

sparkchaser Apr 1st, 2014 08:06 AM

I hear ya.

dulciusexasperis Apr 1st, 2014 09:49 AM

A great many things changed in travel Forums as a result of the shutdown of the Thorntree in December 2012. The real story never really got out as to just what happened. Plenty of rumour, speculation and denials on LPs part. Personally, I believe they were sued by someone.
http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/12...n_2371966.html

The fallout from that has affected ALL Travel Forums and can be seen in various ways. One is removing PMs another is tighter moderating which initially (in early 2013) resulted in posts being removed that had anything that could be construed as objectionable to anyone for any reason. It was ridiculous for a while.

Thorntree also removed two entire branches. The 'Your Choice' branch which was for discussion of any subject regardless of whether it was related to travel or not.

Other Forums removed posts with a note like, 'this topic is not related to travel'.

The other branch removed from the Thorntree was the 'Women Travellers' branch. Think about why they removed that branch. LOL

This Forum closed their 'Lobby' to new users. Attrition will close it down eventually obviously.

suze Apr 1st, 2014 09:59 AM

I know all that already. But thanks for the recap.

Trip Advisor still has a PM feature.

suze Apr 1st, 2014 10:01 AM

<This Forum closed their 'Lobby' to new users. Attrition will close it down eventually obviously.>

It's called "The Lounge" and it's still going strong. Since you aren't on that forum, you wouldn't know that. "Attrition" could eventually close any and every travel forum. Just look at Frommer's.

sparkchaser Apr 1st, 2014 10:14 AM

Thanks for the history lesson, dulciusexasperis but I was already aware of that.
