alone in Buenos Aires?
I'm exploring possible trip destinations for next March..I'm a 21 year old female. I've been around europe and america by myself, so I'm no stranger to solo travel. How is Buenos Aires, safety wise?
thank you! |
Hi Miss Ziegfeld...I went to BA solo last February, fine, no safety problems other than to use common sense like not walking late at night, not wearing good jewelry, etc. Great city, go for it!! Stay in a good neighborhood (mine was Bario Norte, right on the edge of Recoleta).

I was there a few weeks ago and walked around alone with no problems.

As a solo female traveller myself, I found BA to be one of the safest cities (the other, strangely enough was Bangkok). This due to the very heavy military/police presence in both countries. The city itself is very cosmopolitian, and reminds one of Europe, in fact Italians make up a large part of the population. It is still incredibly cheap, but make sure to take lots of single US dollar bills to leave as tips for meals, taxi's etc.--it will be greatly appreciated. I took the local subway everywhere, although at night cabs might be a better bet. Lots of fun things to do, interesting areas to explore etc. Most people speak some english, or you can practice any small amount of spanish you know. Have a great time!

I'm also looking to travel/explore Argentina and other parts of South America... I'm in your age range..20 year old female...Have you found any other resources for getting in touch with others who have similar destinations in mind & are in our age range? I'de also just be curious to hear about your plans, etc if you are at all interested

Physically, I felt quite safe day or night (but then I'm a guy, too, although fairly slight of stature). However, my digital camera was stolen from me as I was photographing the Palacio del Congreso one afternoon. So just be aware of your surroundings as in most urban areas.
Even before the theft, however, I wasn't all that enamored of the city (although it appears the other posters here enjoyed their visits). I thought it was too crowded and polluted myself. (And I'm somebody who likes New York City and Hong Kong at rush hours!) But the people were friendly enough and the dollar buys so much -- particularly at meals -- that I almost felt guilty paying so little for huge three-course meals. |
